Roddick helps U.S. beat Switzerland

Croatia next Davis Cup opponent

From Beacon Journal wire services

Andy Roddick again closed out a victory for the United States Davis Cup team.

Roddick swept past Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets to give the U.S. an opening-round victory Sunday in the best-of-five series in Birmingham, Ala.

Roddick, ranked sixth in the world, is now 11-0 with a chance to close out a Davis Cup series.

This one was emphatic: 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Next up for the U.S. is Croatia in the quarterfinals on July 10-12. Roddick wasn't overly impressed by his perfect record in this role.

''In order to clinch, your team has to put you up 2-1,'' Roddick said. ''I've always had a chance to play that fourth match. A lot of it is circumstantial and the way the schedule and draw plays out. I've gotten a lot of chances to do that.

''I've simplified the way I look at it. You come in and regardless of what the score is — everyone makes a big deal about it and obviously it's extremely relevant, but at the same time I've got to come out and try to win a point each day I play.''

Roddick's 31st Davis Cup win moved him past Andre Agassi into second place on the U.S. list, 10 behind John McEnroe.

More Davis Cup: Chile out in sweep

• Croatia recorded its first 5-0 sweep in a Davis Cup World Group series in Porec, Croatia, completing a crushing victory over Chile in the reverse singles on its way to the quarterfinals.

Radek Stepanek beat Gilles Simon 7-6 (2), 6-3, 7-6 (0) in the opening singles in Ostrava, Czech Republic, to give the Czech Republic an unbeatable 3-1 lead over France and a place in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup World Group. The Czechs will play last year's runner-up Argentina at home on July 10-12.

Dimitry Tursunov rallied from two sets down to beat Romania's Victor Hanescu, while Teimuraz Gabashvili later defeated Victor Crivoi to give Russia a victory in the Davis Cup first-round series in Sibiu, Romania.

• Germany advanced to the Davis Cup quarterfinals after Nicolas Kiefer defeated Austria's Juergen Melzer in the decisive singles match in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

• Argentina won both reverse singles matches to sweep the Netherlands 5-0 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and storm into the Davis Cup quarterfinals despite missing two top players.

Radek Stepanek beat Gilles Simon 7-6,(2), 6-3, 7-6 (0) in the opening singles match in Ostrava, Czech Republic, to clinch the Czech Republic's win over France and a place in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.

• Israel reached the Davis Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1987, winning both singles matches in Malmo, Sweden, to oust seven-time champion Sweden 3-2.

Football: Cardinals sign McFadden

• The Arizona Cardinals signed cornerback Bryant McFadden to a two-year contract. McFadden made eight regular-season starts last season while helping lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to a Super Bowl victory over the Cardinals. He had 54 tackles and one sack despite missing six games due to an arm injury.

• Sports attorney David Cornwell is challenging the NFL's right to discipline players by proposing to appoint an independent arbitrator to review — and have the power to change — rulings made by the commissioner. Cornwell, one of four finalists in the running to replace the late Gene Upshaw as the NFL Players Association's executive director, described the league's current disciplinary policy as being ''draconian'' and requiring independent oversight.

Winter sports: Celski takes title
