Running back facing suspension after plea of guilty to gun charge
Published on Thursday, Mar 19, 2009
From staff and wire reports
Bills running back Marshawn Lynch expects to be suspended by the NFL for his latest run-in with the law and added he's gotten the message that the league ''won't tolerate any more screw-ups'' from him.
Delivering a message of humility and repentance — and minus the flashy gold grill he usually wears across his teeth — Lynch vowed Wednesday that he's ready to change his ways and prepared to accept the consequences for his actions.
''It has kind of sunk in, and I felt that this was the next step to letting you guys know that there will be a change,'' Lynch said. ''I never had the intention of getting into trouble or anything like that. But along the way, my road got rocky, and now you know it's time to set my pavement straight.''
The former first-round draft pick out of California held a 9-minute news conference in the Bills practice facility in Orchard Park, N.Y., a day after meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Browns sign Herron
The Browns replaced one Northwestern running back with another, signing free agent Noah Herron Wednesday after losing Jason Wright to the Arizona Cardinals on Monday.
Herron, 26, 5-foot-11 and 225 pounds, has played for the Pittsburgh Steelers (2005), Green Bay Packers (2005-07) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2008). In 23 career games, he has rushed 85 times for 273 yards and three touchdowns and caught 29 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns.
He spent 2007 on injured reserve with a knee injury and was inactive for the four games he spent on the Bucs' roster in 2008.
Herron finished as Northwestern's fifth-leading rusher with 2,524 career yards and 26 touchdowns in 2001-04. The Steelers drafted him in the seventh round.
Herron was most recently in the spotlight in June 2008, when he thwarted a burglary at his suburban Green Bay home by hitting the man with a post he had unscrewed from his bed.
Browns sign Ivy
Profootballtalk.com reported that cornerback Corey Ivy has agreed to terms of a one-year deal with the Browns.
An eight-year veteran, Ivy spent the past three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He has also played for the St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (including their Super Bowl season in 2002). In the past seven seasons, Ivy has played in 109 games with 21 starts, 13 of those with the Ravens in 2007.
Ivy is the first ex-Raven acquired by new Browns General Manager George Kokinis, who spent the past six years the Ravens' director of pro personnel.
Saints sign Dinkins
Browns free-agent tight end Darnell Dinkins has agreed to a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints, the Times-Picayune reported.
Dinkins, 32, a seven-year veteran, was primarily a blocker and special teams player during his three seasons with the Browns.
Dinkins' departure leaves newly acquired Robert Royal, Steve Heiden and Martin Rucker as the top three on the Browns' depth chart at tight end. Heiden is coming off surgery for a torn ACL suffered in mid-December and Rucker played little as a rookie. Kellen Winslow was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the opening day of free agency.
Drug buying denied
Correll Buckhalter denies he was involved with an alleged drug dealer who is on trial in Pennsylvania, according to his agent, J.R. Rickert.
Delaware County Deputy District Attorney Katayoun Copeland told a jury Wednesday that alleged drug dealer Styles N. Beckles of Clifton Heights, Pa., contended that he sold drugs to athletes, including Buckhalter, a running back who signed a $10 million contract with the Denver Broncos last month after eight seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Neither Buckhalter nor any other athletes have been charged.
Court documents say Beckles had 115 vials of marijuana in his car when he was arrested.
Instant replay rules
The NFL will look into changing instant replay rules in hopes of avoiding a repeat of the blown call by referee Ed Hochuli that helped cost San Diego a game last season.
The competition committee will propose at the league meetings next week that when the ball comes loose when a quarterback is throwing, replay can be used to determine whether it is a fumble or an incomplete pass.
Surgery for Warner
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left hip. The team said Wednesday that the operation to repair a torn labrum and ''clean up some loose fragments'' was performed by Dr. Marc Philippon at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo.
Warner, 37, played with the injury last season, starting all 20 games in the Cardinals' run to the Super Bowl. The quarterback signed a two-year, $23 million contract with a $15 million signing bonus two weeks ago.
Other deals
Defensive end Bertrand Berry has agreed to a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals also re-signed free agent linebacker Clark Haggans to a three-year contract. . . . The Tampa Bay Buccaneers found help for a depleted linebacker corps, signing free agent Angelo Crowell. . . . The Indianapolis Colts re-signed running back Lance Ball, linebacker Buster Davis and offensive lineman Dan Federkeil. . . . The Baltimore Ravens signed backup cornerback Chris Carr to a two-year, $5 million deal and waived veteran Samari Rolle. . . . The New Orleans Saints agreed to a one-year contract with free agent defensive lineman Paul Spicer. They also signed veteran free-agent safety Darren Sharper. . . . The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed cornerback Fernando Bryant to a one-year contract to retain some secondary depth after losing free-agent cornerback Bryant McFadden to the Arizona Cardinals. Pittsburgh also released guard Kendall Simmons and did not attempt to re-sign tackle Marvel Smith. . . . Chicago Bears' Frank Omiyale is the new starting right tackle.
