Browns report
Quinn not taking trade talk to heart

QB says rapport fine with new offensive coordinator Daboll

By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

CLEVELAND: If the Browns are trying to trade quarterback Brady Quinn in a scenario involving disgruntled Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, Quinn has caught no hint of it.

Speaking at halftime of the Cavaliers game Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena, Quinn said he hasn't spoken to coach Eric Mangini or General Manager George Kokinis about the Cutler rumors.

One of the most prominent would also involve the New York Jets, with Cutler going to the Jets, Quinn to the Broncos and the Browns receiving draft choices.

The scenario has been thrown out as logical because Quinn spent two years at Notre Dame under coach Charlie Weis, the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator. New Broncos coach Josh McDaniels spent his entire pro career in New England and will run an offensive attack similar to the Patriots'.

Asked whether he'd talked to Mangini or Kokinis about being traded, Quinn said: ''Not to ask questions like that because there's no need to. If that were actually true or were going to happen, I think they eventually would let me know and talk about it.''

So he puts no stock in the talk?

''None whatsoever,'' Quinn said.

''There's nothing really you can do about it. Obviously, I want to be in Cleveland. I grew up rooting for 'em; I'm totally living my dream now. It's out of your control.''

Quinn finds the presumption about the Weis offense and the Broncos interesting, because new Browns offensive coordinator Brian Daboll served as receivers coach when Weis was with the Patriots.

''It's funny because people underestimate the fact that Brian Daboll was under coach Weis as well,'' he said. ''You can say that for both of us. There's always rumors; it's the drama of the NFL.''

Quinn said he stayed in Cleveland after the season and has been working with Daboll.

''So far, the rapport with him has been great, going up and meeting with him,'' Quinn said. ''It's been a lot of fun from that standpoint.''

Most observers presume that either Quinn or Derek Anderson will be traded before training camp begins, perhaps on draft day.

Anderson struggled in 2008 after a Pro Bowl season in 2007, but Quinn started only three games last year before suffering a broken finger.

Asked whether he and Anderson will both be with the Browns this season, Quinn said: ''I don't know. You're asking the wrong guy. I go in there, I put my hat on and I go to work. You should try talking to the other guys.''

QUINN IS NOT GONNA BE A GOOD NFL QB,SORRY BROWNS FANS BUT THE KID HAS NEVER SHOWN A GLIMPSE OF ANYTHING OTHER THAN MAYBE A THIRD STRING QB,,BUT GO AHEAD AND KEEP THINKING THAT HE IS,,AND YOUR CLOWNS MIGHT WIN 3-4 GAMES AGAIN THIS YEAR ,,HAHAHAHAHAHAHA,,,,,GO STEELERS.

I personally have no favorite between Quinn and Anderson. I think both may be solid QBs in the right situation. How many guys look great with one team, terrible with another and then great again with still another team? Look at Curt Warners career as an example. Unfortunately, with the current group of WRs and RBs I find it hard to believe ANY QB will have success starting for the Browns in 2009.

GO STEELERS !!!! All this QB talk is just the distraction the Clowns need to keep Pittsburgh on top of their division.

I agree, CleveRox.

It's alot like the scenario of LeBron deciding to play for the Knicks. Why would anyone in their right mind want to go to a situation where the team is terrible and would need to be rebuilt over the next 5 years?

LeBron wants to make hay while the sun shines. Being in New York, waiting for the Knicks or Nets around him to improve to a championship level... this just isn't something LeBron is going to want to do.

Wasting 5 prime years of his career isn't gonna happen.

And I have a feeling that even Joe Montana in his prime wouldn't be able to win more than 4 to 6 games with the Browns in this upcoming season.

As I and many others wrote several times before last season began, trading DA before last season would have been the wisest thing to do. But I suppose that's one of the reasons Phil and Romeo were kicked to the curb.

So, Jets get Jay cutler, The Bronco's get Quinn and I guess the browns are stuck with a on/off QB in DA, and draft picks. Ill be upset if this happens. I dont think its even fair if the Browns recieve a first and second rounder. The Browns need a QB, not another rookie QB to ride the bench for the next 3 years tryin to earn a spot. I thought we just went thru this with Quinn.. Give Quinn his chance.

I agree give Quinn his chance and dump Derrck...should have got rid of him the first time before his stock went so low...I know we once again will be rebuilding for the 20th time, but let's atleast have a QB who played with us before.

Trade DA for a sack of potatoes. I don't care how high or low of draft picks we get for him, just trade him please and give BQ is deserved chance to play for the team he grew up with. My goodness; why is this so hard to understand?

All of this Quinn talk is a smokescreen to build some value into Anderson.

(I hope!). DA is a turnover machine. Get him out of here.

"steelers rule browns should get rid of him he stinks"

ANOTHER intelligent, well thought out comment from a product of the Pittsburgh public school system and Steelers fan. Hey, kkkkk, do you know what a punctuation mark is?? They are usually placed at the end of a sentence. Try using one.

Clevefan

Posted 09:04 AM, 03/23/2009

DA, atleast he has proved he can do somethning. BQ has not. Throw away a QB that has had "a" pro bowl year for someone who has proved nothing??

Come on Cleveland fans, us if anyone, knows how hard it is to find a good QB that wants to play in Cleveland. Keep what we have seen win and let the unproven go.

Carbunkle,

I should've read this article first, i posted the same thing about Montana not winning with our WRs. Quinn and Anderson will not have success this year.

I think if they offer up their 1st rounder and a 2nd day pick, you have to take it. Only if we keep the 5th pick though, I'm out if we have to give that up. Quinn was the 22nd pick, the Jets could offer a 17th plus something. That's a good deal by NFL logic.

Anderson will be our stop-gap QB, unless he returns to 2007 form. Which is unlikely. He's just not a leader.

If this happens, I would draft Crabtree at 5 and a LB at 17. Crabtree's foot injury will be a bargaining chip in the Browns favor during contract negotiations.

Don't rid of Quinn. He's the only good player we have right now. Don't be stupid.

What did D.A. prove he could do? I didn't see the Browns in the playoffs, I didn't see D.A. winning many games this past season. So he beat a bunch of crappy teams with his O-line playing great and the offense clicking on ALL cylinders. When the opponents were good, D.A. was not.

The only good player we have?! Alrightty there kiddo. He's the best clipboard holder we have, maybe.

D. Jackson, Josh Cribbs, Rodgers, J. Thomas... are the best players we have.

It is all about winning. Compare the Browns and Steelers Super Bowl Records.

The Steelers are 5 of 6 and the Browns are 0 of 0.

Hey the Browns do have a perfect Super Bowl record don't they?

Steelers of 6 of 7. But that don't matter to these brownie fans. They will start talking about how great the brownies were in the All-American Football Conference of the 40's before there was a superbowl.

hannaman

Not much of a bargaining chip if the Browns are drafting him 5th.

hannaman,

A contract could be worked out with Crabtree that is heavy on performance milestones, such as the contract they worked out with Quinn. His signing bonus could be lowered too. Whatever team does draft Crabtree, they will have the advantage when trying to sign him.
