Three-time All-Star hasn't played all season because of knee surgery
Published on Tuesday, Mar 24, 2009
Gilbert Arenas signaled through various sources Monday that a return to the court is possible this weekend against the Detroit Pistons.
The Washington Wizards' three-time All-Star, who hasn't played all season as he recovers from knee surgery, first sent a text message to Comcast SportsNet saying: ''I'm playing Saturday against Detroit'' and that he would subsequently play only in home games, except for an April 8 road trip to Cleveland.
After the team's morning shootaround, Arenas was asked by a Washington Post reporter whether the news was true.
''It's only true if I play on Saturday,'' he said.
Arenas then told the Washington Times by phone that playing Saturday is ''the plan'' — but isn't set in stone.
Somewhere in the middle was interim coach Ed Tapscott, who could only confirm that Arenas would not play Monday night against the Chicago Bulls.
As for Saturday?
''That's certainly a possibility, but not definitive yet,'' Tapscott said.
Tapscott said Arenas needs to get through some more practices before playing.
Knicks signing The Knicks have signed free agent center Courtney Sims to a 10-day contract.
The 6-foot-11, 245-pound Sims had been playing for the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League.
Undrafted out of the University of Michigan, Sims has played 13 minutes in four NBA games with Indiana and Phoenix over the last two seasons.
He signed two 10-day contracts with the Phoenix Suns beginning Jan. 20 and appeared in one game for the Suns this season.
Cheikh Samb's 10-day contract had expired and the club elected not to re-sign him.
Foyle re-signing
The Orlando Magic have re-signed center Adonal Foyle after trading him to the Memphis Grizzlies last month.
Foyle was sent to Memphis in a three-team deal just before the Feb. 19 trade deadline that brought point guard Rafer Alston to Orlando from Houston.
The Magic needed an upgrade at point guard after All-Star Jameer Nelson's season-ending shoulder injury.
Memphis waived Foyle on March 1.
Magic coaches have touted the 34-year-old Foyle as a strong practice partner for center Dwight Howard. His re-signing is likely for those purposes.
