NHL roundup
Penguins take two-game lead over Hurricanes

Malkin's exceptional performance leads to 7-4 victory. Center celebrates his first three-goal playoff game

Evgeni Malkin put Pittsburgh ahead for good by scoring twice in the third period of his first three-goal playoff performance and the Penguins beat the Carolina Hurricanes 7-4 Thursday night in Pittsburgh to open a two-game lead in the Eastern Conference finals.

Sidney Crosby scored a record-tying sixth goal to start a playoff game, yet was upstaged by NHL regular-season scoring leader Malkin during an exceptional performance that also gave Malkin the playoff scoring lead 25-24 over Crosby.

Carolina had won five straight Game 2s, including the first two rounds this spring after losing Game 1 each time, but couldn't match Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux era-like run-and-gun offense despite rallying to tie three times.

The Hurricanes will host Game 3 on Saturday night.

Notes

• The Detroit Red Wings' Star center and MVP finalist Pavel Datsyuk's missed practice with a sore foot Thursday before the Red Wings departed for Chicago, but his coach and teammates were hoping he'd be able to go against the Blackhawks tonight.

Datsyuk was struck by a puck during Detroit's 3-2 overtime win in Game 2 on Tuesday night.

• The Minnesota Wild hired Chuck Fletcher to take over as general manager, turning to the Pittsburgh Penguins' front office to find just the second GM in their brief history. Fletcher replaces Doug Risebrough, who held the Wild's top front-office job from their founding in 1999 until he was dismissed in April.

Fletcher has been with the Penguins since 2006. Before that, he spent four years with the Anaheim Ducks as director of hockey operations, assistant GM and overseeing scouting and player development.
