QB may have hurt leg; Ratliff behind Quinn as team finishes drills

BEREA: Browns quarterback Derek Anderson sat out the second of two mandatory minicamp practices Friday with an apparent leg injury. The team would not give details afterward.
Anderson came up limping after scrambling to find an open receiver in the morning session, but was able to finish the practice. His last pass in the two-minute drill was intercepted by safety Mike Adams.
But after lunch, Anderson wore a sleeve on the lower right leg and had difficulty jogging downfield. He worked with injured teammates Jamal Lewis, Steve Heiden and Braylon Edwards at the start of drills.
Anderson later put on his helmet to hear the plays being called over the headset, but watched the team portion from the side. He did not throw in individual quarterback drills.
When the team concluded the evening with a two-minute drill, Brett Ratliff was the second quarterback working behind Brady Quinn.
Anderson and Quinn are competing for the starting job, which will not be determined until late in the preseason.
Overworked punter?
Dave Zastudil looked like he was losing steam in the morning session, but has good reason. He's the only punter on the roster.
''I'm OK,'' Zastudil said. ''I'm working on a few things.''
Zastudil may not have help for training camp.
''I don't think we do any more than anybody else does,'' coach Eric Mangini said of how much kicking one player does. ''[Special teams coach] Brad [Seely] has got a lot of experience in terms of how many reps guys get, so I have a lot of confidence in the numbers that we are asking to execute are within what is going to give them the best chance to keep moving forward.''
Notes
Both Quinn and Ratliff led the Browns to field goals during the two-minute drill in the afternoon. . . . Mangini said linebacker Kaluka Maiava, a fourth-round pick from USC, was excused from this minicamp for ''a personal issue.'' . . . Mangini didn't sound interested in quarterback Michael Vick, released by the Falcons Friday. ''I wish him well, but I'm focusing on the guys that we have here,'' Mangini said. ''We look at all players who we think can help us and it works within the context of the guys that we are bringing in.'' Intelligence has been the common denominator for the players Mangini has added and Vick, who is serving a 23-month sentence for running a dog-fighting ring, does not seem to fit Mangini's profile. . . . Mangini praised two rookies, running back James Davis and receiver Mohamed Massaquoi. . . . Among those running penalty laps were Quinn, Isaac Sowells, Don Carey, Jerome Harrison and Eric Steinbach. Steinbach jogged his laps as the theme from the movie Chariots of Fire played over the speakers.
