Former Indians outfielder Mel Hall was found guilty Tuesday of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl he coached on an elite basketball team a decade ago in Fort Worth, Texas. A Tarrant County jury took about 90 minutes to convict Hall, 48, on three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child. The sentencing phase was to resume today. He could face life in prison. Hall played for the Indians from 1984 to 1988. He hit .276 with 134 home runs and 620 RBI in a career that included stints with the Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants.

The New York Yankees activated reliever Brian Bruney and designated Jose Veras for assignment to open a roster spot. . . . The Chicago Cubs recalled infielder/outfielder Jake Fox from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday and placed left-hander Jason Waddell on the 15-day disabled list. . . . The Washington Nationals activated right-hander Kip Wells from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-hander Jason Bergmann to Triple-A Syracuse. . . . The Minnesota Twins sent reliever Jesse Crain to Triple-A Rochester to make room for starter Glen Perkins. . . . The Atlanta Braves activated first baseman Casey Kotchman off the 15-day disabled list and optioned first baseman Barbaro Canizares to Triple-A Gwinnett. . . . The Houston Astros activated second baseman Kazuo Matsui from the 15-day disabled list and placed infielder Geoff Blum on the DL. . . . The San Francisco Giants sent down second baseman Emmanuel Burriss to Triple-A Fresno and called up Matt Downs.
Smoltz to pitch
John Smoltz is set to make his first start for the Boston Red Sox on June 25. Boston manager Terry Francona said that Smoltz, who hasn't pitched in the majors since having shoulder surgery a year ago, will pitch on the road against the Washington Nationals. The Red Sox signed him in January as a free agent after he spent 20 seasons with the Atlanta Braves.
Drug test on Sosa
Former slugger Sammy Sosa reportedly tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug in 2003. The New York Times reported the failed test on its Web site, citing lawyers familiar with the case. The newspaper did not identify the drug. Sosa is sixth on baseball's career home run list with 609. He has not played in the majors since 2007.
