The New York Islanders selected London Knights center John Tavares with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft in Montreal.
The 6-foot, 195-pound native of Oakville, Ontario, is projected to be a star scorer in the NHL scouts have been salivating over him since he was 14 after he piled up 215 goals over the last four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League.
The Tampa Bay Lightning selected Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman with the second pick, and the Colorado Avalanche followed with forward Matt Duchene. With the fourth pick, Atlanta selected center Evander Kane of the Vancouver Giants, followed by Los Angeles, which chose Brandon Wheat Kings center Brayden Schenn. The Phoenix Coyotes drafted Swedish defenseman Oliver Ekman- Larsson with the sixth pick.
The Columbus Blue Jackets swapped two draft picks to the Islanders for four selections. The Blue Jackets dealt their only first-round pick, No. 16, along with their third-round pick, No. 77. The Islanders sent the No. 26 pick in the first round, No. 37 in the second, No. 62 in the third and No. 92 in the fourth round to Columbus.
More hockey: Lemieux is U.S. citizen
• NHL veteran Claude Lemieux took the oath of U.S. citizenship Friday before a federal judge in Phoenix. The 43-year-old with four Stanley Cup titles from three teams said he has no enmity toward his native Canada, but wanted to share citizenship with his family and vote in the country he has called home for 20 years.
• The Detroit Red Wings want a new deal to play at Joe Louis Arena. The team will not exercise an option to renew its 30-year-old lease, but wants to continue talks with the city on a new deal. Ilitch Holdings Inc. President and Chief Executive Christopher Ilitch said the team is looking for a new lease that is ''fair and equitable for all parties.''
Golf: Eisenhower to enter hall
• Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose passion for golf helped boost its popularity after World War II, will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. He will be the first U.S. president in the hall when he is inducted posthumously Nov. 2 in St. Augustine, Fla. Joining him will be two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain, ex-PGA champ Lanny Wadkins and Christy O'Connor of Ireland.
• Kenny Perry followed up his opening 61 with a 68 and held on to a 2-stroke lead when thunderstorms halted the second round of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn. Ryan Moore shot a 65 to move into second place.
• South Korean star Jiyai Shin shot a 4-under 68 for a 3-stroke lead at the Wegmans LPGA in Rochester, N.Y. Play was interrupted by thunderstorms for nearly five hours, then called off for the day at 8:37 p.m. Dozens of players will complete their second round today.
• Retief Goosen of South Africa shot a 4-under 68 for a 1-shot lead after the second round of the BMW International Open in Munich. Goosen stood at 12-under 132 at the Golfclub Munchen Eichenried. Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark trailed by 1 after a 65. John Daly shot 70 for a 144 total, missing the cut by 3 strokes.
• Fred Funk is the leader at the rain-delayed Dick's Sporting Goods Open in Endicott, N.Y. Funk shot an 8-under 64 to gain a 2-shot lead over Jay Haas and Lonnie Nielsen.
Autos: Franchitti on Richmond pole
• Dario Franchitti won the pole position for tonight's IndyCar Series at Richmond International Raceway in Virginia. He averaged 167.315 mph over four laps on the 0.75-mile oval. Scott Dixon earned the outside spot on the front row with a speed of 166.638, while Helio Castroneves and points leader Ryan Briscoe will start in the second row. Danica Patrick will start 10th.
• A midafternoon downpour washed away NASCAR Sprint Cup qualifying in Loudon, N.H. The lineup for Sunday's Lenox Industrial Tools 301 will be set by owner points, with series leader Tony Stewart starting from the pole despite crashing in Friday's opening practice.
Basketball: Mourning is executive
• Alonzo Mourning is returning to the Miami Heat as vice president of player development. Mourning, 39, retired from the Heat this season and became the first player in franchise history to have his jersey retired.
• The Utah Jazz made a qualifying offer to forward Paul Millsap, giving the team the right to match any offers he receives as a restricted free agent. Millsap averaged 13.5 points and 8.6 rebounds last season. He stepped in after starter Carlos Boozer missed 41 games with a knee injury.
Other: Miami of Ohio player gets deal
• The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms with tight end Jake O'Connell, one of the team's three seventh-round draft picks. O'Connell played 41 games at Miami of Ohio, catching 46 passes for 453 yards and four touchdowns, including 25 catches for 258 yards in 2008. Terms weren't released.
• Boxer Floyd Mayweather, who was scheduled to fight Juan Manuel Marquez next month at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, said that he's been cleared by doctors and the fight has been rescheduled for Sept. 19. Mayweather damaged cartilage in his ribs during training two weeks ago.
