Friday's Interleague results
Yankees 9, Mets 1 Alex Rodriguez hit his 564th home run to pass Reggie Jackson on the career list, three errors by Mets infielders led to a four-run second inning and CC Sabathia pitched the visiting Yankees to the win. Fill-in leadoff batter Brett Gardner had a career-high five hits, including his third home run of the season and a triple. Rodriguez made it 7-1 with a two-run, opposite-field drive in the eighth off reliever Elmer Dessens, into the right-center field bullpens for his 11th homer this season.
Twins 3, Cardinals 1 Glen Perkins worked seven dominant innings in 92-degree heat and visiting Minnesota got key hits from Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer. Joe Mauer was 1-for-2 with two walks and is batting .396 for the Twins. Kubel and Cuddyer each had two hits and an RBI, and Perkins contributed a pair of sacrifices. Adam Wainwright (8-5) also lasted seven innings, allowing three runs, one unearned.
Rangers 12, Padres 2 David Murphy and Hank Blalock homered to pace a suddenly resurgent Texas Rangers offense and Kevin Millwood won his fifth straight decision at home. Murphy's three-run homer, a towering 404-foot shot into the second deck in right field, put Texas up 6-1 against Walter Silva (0-1), who gave up nine runs in 21/3 innings. Millwood (8-5) allowed two runs over six innings.
Rays 7, Marlins 3 B.J. Upton's three-run double snapped an eighth-inning tie and helped the host Rays beat the Marlins in the opener of a series between the intrastate rivals. Carlos Pena, Evan Longoria and Carl Crawford also drove in runs as the AL champions ended Florida's five-game winning streak. J.P. Howell, the fifth Tampa Bay pitcher, worked 11/3 innings for the victory.
Red Sox 4, Braves 1 Josh Beckett threw seven more scoreless innings against host Atlanta, and David Ortiz homered for Boston. Beckett (9-3) has faced the Braves twice in the past seven days and still hasn't given up a run. This time, he allowed six hits, struck out six and didn't walk anyone. Ortiz is hitting .333 over his last 17 games, with seven homers and 14 RBI, though he's still batting just .218 overall.
Pirates 5, Royals 3 Virgil Vasquez went six innings for his first major-league win and host Pittsburgh got home runs from three unlikely power sources. Vasquez (1-0), recalled by the Pirates after Thursday's game to make his first start since Aug. 31, 2007, allowed two runs and four hits while striking out seven. Nyjer Morgan, Jason Jaramillo and Jack Wilson homered for Pittsburgh, which has won three straight since snapping a five-game losing streak. Mark Teahen hit his ninth homer and Miguel Olivo went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Royals.
Orioles 11, Nationals 1 Rookie Brad Bergesen allowed four hits in six innings to win his fourth straight decision and Melvin Mora had four RBI for host Baltimore. Aubrey Huff drove in three runs, and Nick Markakis, Adam Jones and Nolan Reimold all had three hits for the Orioles, who used an eight-run sixth inning to turn the game into a rout. Bergesen (5-2) gave up one run, struck out five and walked two. He is 4-0 in six starts since May 24.
Cubs 5, White Sox 4 Geovany Soto hit a three-run homer to back another solid start by Randy Wells and the host Cubs broke a four-game losing streak. Milton Bradley of the Cubs went after the Gatorade cooler in the dugout after he flied out in the top of the sixth, had an angry exchange with manager Lou Piniella in the tunnel and was told to go home. Soto hit a three-run homer off Jose Contreras (2-7) in the seventh to give the Cubs a 5-2 lead.

Brewers 5, Giants 1 Yovani Gallardo outdueled Matt Cain and Ryan Braun drove in a pair of runs, lifting host Milwaukee. Slumping shortstop J.J. Hardy homered for the Brewers. Pitcher Gallardo (8-4) gave up a first-inning home run to Pablo Sandoval before settling down to retire 16 Giants batters in a row between the second and seventh innings. Gallardo struck out nine while giving up four hits and three walks, exiting to a standing ovation with two outs in the eighth.
