University of Akron men's basketball coach Keith Dambrot announced on today the promotion of Rick McFadden to the role of assistant coach and named Dan Peters to his staff in the position of director of basketball operations.
McFadden has served as UA's director of basketball operations for the past four seasons, and his promotion fills a spot left vacant by the April departure of associate head coach Jeff Boals for an assistant coaching job at Ohio State. Peters, who has spent 30 years on the collegiate coaching scene, comes to the Zips after spending the last five years at Ohio State.
''I'm excited to promote Rick in this way and to add someone of Dan's experience level to the staff,'' Dambrot said in a statement. ''Rick is very deserving of taking this step up and is more than prepared to handle the new responsibilities that come along with that. Dan is an Ohio guy who has been successful at every level of the sport.''
McFadden, who will be involved in all aspects of the program, has aided Dambrot during four of the most successful seasons in the history of the program. In his time with the Zips, the team has advanced to the postseason three times, participating in the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and the National Invitation Tournament in 2008 and 2006. Additionally, during that time UA was crowned MAC East Division champion in 2007 and advanced to the MAC tournament championship game three consecutive times (winning the title in 2009).
McFadden, 27, completed his bachelor's degree in secondary education from Akron in 2005. He is one of two members of Dambrot's staff to have played under his tutelage, joining Zips' assistant coach Terry Weigand who competed for him for two seasons at Tiffin (1985-86).
Peters comes to the Akron campus after spending the last five seasons on Thad Matta's staff at Ohio State. At UA, he will oversee all logistics related to the program, including scheduling, coordination of team travel and tape exchange.
In three seasons as an assistant coach at OSU (2005-07), Peters helped the Buckeyes to 81 victories, two NCAA Tournament appearances, a school-record 35 wins in 2006-07, two outright Big Ten regular-season titles, a league tournament title and an appearancein the 2007 NCAA National Championship game.
''Dan is a terrific addition to our staff,'' Dambrot said. ''He has tremendous passion, is a great teacher and will be a valuable resource. There is likely not a scenario to arise that he hasn't dealt with before in some way, shape or form.''
