Ron Artest is joining the Los Angeles Lakers. David Bauman, Artest's agent, told the Associated Press that the Houston Rockets forward has orally agreed to play for the NBA champions next season. Bauman said the final details are being worked out.
ESPN.com reported that Artest had agreed to a three-year deal worth $18 million. Bauman would not confirm those numbers, saying the deal was still being negotiated.
''We're not quite there yet,'' Bauman said. ''We're still working on it.''
The Rockets also met with Trevor Ariza on Thursday in hopes of bringing the Los Angeles Lakers forward to Houston, according to the Associated Press.
Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey met with the free agent in Las Vegas, according to a person familiar with the situation who requested anonymity because the negotiations were ongoing.
The meeting was first reported by KRIV-TV in Houston.
The 6-foot-8 Ariza averaged 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists for the Lakers last season, which ended with the NBA championship. The Rockets are looking for help because Houston star Tracy McGrady is already expected to miss much of next season as he recovers from a knee injury and center Yao Ming's foot injury could keep him out indefinitely.
Artest was looking to cash in after earning $7.4 million in a productive first season in Houston, where he averaged 17.1 points and 5.2 rebounds and shot 39.9 percent from 3-point range.
Golf: Kim takes 2-shot lead
• Anthony Kim ran off eight birdies over his final 13 holes and set the course record at Congressional in Bethesda, Md., with an 8-under 62, giving him a 2-shot lead over AT&T National tournament host Tiger Woods, Bryce Molder and D.A. Points.
• Morgan Pressel, Song-Hee Kim and Laura Diaz shot 7-under 64s to share the first-round lead in the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic, a stroke ahead of Michelle Wie and Suzann Pettersen in Sylvania. Pettersen aced the 154-yard third hole with a 7-iron. Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park, Jiyai Shin, Lindsey Wright, Jee Young Lee and Minea Blomqvist had 66s.
NFL: Jets' Pace suspended
• The NFL suspended New York Jets linebacker Calvin Pace for four games without pay for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Pace will miss the Jets' first four games of the season and be eligible to return for the Monday night game at Miami on Oct. 12. In a statement issued by the Jets, Pace said the ban is a result of his taking an over-the-counter dietary supplement that he was unaware violated the NFL's policy.
• A jury in the U.S. Virgin Islands has awarded Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor, a former University of Akron standout, and two partners the return of a $1.5 million deposit from the botched sale of a private island. The NFL star will be given his share of the deposit, plus expenses, after a jury determined that the seller breached a 2004 contract for the 158-acre island.
• Suspended NFL star Michael Vick has submitted a revised bankruptcy plan that funnels more of his future earnings to creditors, though a judge did not immediately rule on the proposal. Vick filed the new Chapter 11 plan in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Newport News, Va. A judge rejected Vick's original plan in April.
• The Carolina Panthers are taking another chance with a former minor-league baseball player. The franchise that once drafted and started quarterback Chris Weinke claimed rookie tight end Andrew Davie, 26, off waivers from the New York Jets. Davie spent four seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system before switching to football. He caught 24 passes for 199 yards and six touchdowns in three seasons at Arkansas.
Other: Recchi to stick with Bruins
• Mark Recchi, 41, joined the Boston Bruins hoping to win his fourth Stanley Cup, and he decided to stay with them for another shot at it. The NHL's sixth leading active goal scorer agreed to a one-year deal, his agent, Richard Curran, said.
• Mountain specialist Dan Martin will miss the Tour de France with a knee injury. He will be replaced in the Garmin-Slipstream team by Dutch rider Martijn Maaskant. Martin has tendinitis. The Tour starts Saturday in Monaco and ends July 26.
• Northern Iowa offensive lineman Austin Steichen and two other men have been arrested in connection with an alleged assault. Arnold Park Police Chief Alan Krueger said that Steichen, his brother, Andrew Steichen, and Adam Dwyer were arrested on Tuesday after a fight that left an unidentified man unconscious.
