Friday's MLB results - July 3

Friday's American League results

Mariners 7, Red Sox 6, 11 innings — Rob Johnson doubled home two runs in the 11th inning for visiting Seattle. George Kottaras hit his first major-league homer in the bottom of the 11th for the Red Sox, who tied the game at 5 with two runs in the eighth inning. Seattle's Ronny Cedeno hit a tie-breaking, two-run homer in a three-run fourth, three batters after a fan in the front row snatched a foul pop that third baseman Kevin Youkilis was attempting to make a play on. Jose Lopez added a solo homer for Seattle, which won for the 11th time in 16 games.

Rangers 3, Rays 1 — Tommy Hunter earned his first career victory on his 23rd birthday and Hank Blalock homered for host Texas. Hunter (1-1) was making his sixth career start and third this season. The right-hander allowed three hits and struck out five in 51/3 innings. Jason Jennings, C.J. Wilson and Frank Francisco pitched 32/3 innings of scoreless relief to complete the three-hitter.

White Sox 5, Royals 0 — John Danks threw 71/3 shutout innings and got a big lift from reliever Scott Linebrink as the Chicago White Sox scored their seventh straight victory. A.J. Pierzynski homered, and he and Scott Podsednik both had three hits for the White Sox. Danks (7-6) gave up five hits, striking out seven and not allowing a walk. Linebrink relieved him with the bases loaded and got a double-play grounder from Alberto Callaspo.

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 2 — A.J. Burnett scattered six hits over seven innings, Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez homered, and host New York beat Toronto. Burnett (7-4) allowed two runs, struck out seven and walked two. Mariano Rivera struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 21st save in 22 chances. Brian Tallet (5-6) gave up three runs — two earned — six hits and four walks in six innings.

Friday's National League results

Cubs 2, Brewers 1, 10 innings — Jake Fox drew a bases-loaded walk off Mark DiFelice to force in the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning for the host Chicago Cubs. Ryan Theriot singled off second-baseman Craig Counsell's glove with one out in the 10th and went to second on a wild pitch from DiFelice (4-1). After Theriot moved up on a fly ball, the Brewers intentionally walked Milton Bradley. With a 3-0 count on pinch-hitter Geovany Soto, DeFelice also walked him intentionally to load the bases. Fox fouled off four pitches before walking on a 3-2 pitch.

Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 0 — Jorge De La Rosa pitched eight innings and Ian Stewart hit a solo homer for host Colorado. The Rockies moved to 24-9 overall since Jim Tracy replaced Clint Hurdle as manager. De La Rosa (5-7) allowed four hits and struck out six. The left-hander got 14 groundball outs.

Cardinals 7, Reds 4 — Albert Pujols hit his club-record fourth grand slam of the season, and Jarrett Hoffpauir drove in the go-ahead runs in the ninth inning with his first career hit for visiting St. Louis. Hoffpauir capitalized on shortstop Paul Janish's two-out error with a bases-loaded single off Daniel Ray Herrera (1-4) to snap a 4-4 tie.

Pirates 7, Marlins 4 — Brandon Moss and Ramon Vazquez homered and Charlie Morton pitched six shutout innings to help visiting Pittsburgh. Hanley Ramirez failed to drive in a run for the first time in 11 games for Florida. Morton (1-1) gave up one hit, walked four and struck out four. Andrew McCutchen's run-scoring double and Jack Wilson's two-run double highlighted a three-run seventh that gave Pittsburgh a 7-0 lead.

Braves 9, Nationals 8 — Pinch-hitter Brooks Conrad hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning for visiting Atlanta for their season-high fifth straight win. Yunel Escobar drew a leadoff walk from Jesus Colome (1-1) and moved to second on Matt Diaz's sacrifice bunt. Colome walked Casey Kotchman with two outs before Conrad crushed a 1-0 fastball over the right-field fence for his first career homer.

Phillies 7, Mets 2 — Rodrigo Lopez took a three-hitter into the seventh inning in his first outing in two years, helping host Philadelphia snap a six-game home losing streak. Lopez (1-0) allowed two runs and six hits in 61/3 innings. Mets starter Livan Hernandez (5-4) lasted three-plus innings, allowing seven runs and 10 hits.
