Thursday's American League results
Royals 8, Red Sox 6 David DeJesus hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning as Kansas City rallied from an early four-run deficit and knocked Boston out of sole possession of first place in the A.L. East. David Ortiz hit his 300th career homer for Boston, which fell to 3-4 on its 10-game homestand after splitting six games against Seattle and Oakland. The loss, coupled with the New York Yankees' 6-4 victory over Minnesota, has the teams tied with three games remaining before the All-Star break.
Yankees 6, Twins 4 Mark Teixeira ended a 23-game homerless drought and New York completed a season sweep of host Minnesota. Teixeira connected on the first pitch of the fifth inning. It was his 21st homer of the season and first in 96 at-bats, dating to June 12 against the Mets. Mariano Rivera picked up his 23rd save for the Yankees, who have won eight straight on the road and beaten the Twins all seven times they have met this season.
Rays 3, Blue Jays 2 Rookie David Price outpitched Roy Halladay, and Carlos Pena snapped a fifth-inning tie with a two-run double that helped host Tampa beat Toronto for a three-game sweep. Price (3-3) allowed one run and six hits in six innings as the AL champions beat Halladay for the second time in 11 days. The Blue Jays have lost 10 of 12 and fallen below .500 for the first time this season. Halladay (10-3) pitched for the first time since Toronto General Manager J.P. Ricciardi said he's willing to listen to trade offers for the five-time All-Star.
Thursday's National League results
Nationals 11, Astros 10 An error by Miguel Tejada in the 11th inning made former Nationals reliever Joel Hanrahan a winner as Washington beat host Houston in the completion of a suspended game. Hanrahan was traded by the Nationals on June 30 to the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of a deal for Nyjer Morgan, who scored the winning run Thursday. Hanrahan was pitching for the Nationals when the game was suspended by rain in Washington on May 5. He earned his first win of the season and is 1-3 overall. ''It's pretty funny,'' Hanrahan told the Associated Press by phone from Philadelphia, where the Pirates face the Phillies today. ''It feels pretty good in the situation that we're in. Houston is a team in our [Pittsburgh's] division and we gained ground.''
Astros 9, Nationals 4 Lance Berkman's three-run homer was one of 16 hits used by Houston in a victory over Washington. The win came a few hours after the Astros lost the completion of a suspended game from May. In the regularly scheduled game, All-Star Hunter Pence and Jeff Keppinger drove in two runs each for the Astros, who used a four-run sixth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and take the lead.
Dodgers 11, Mets 2 Manny Ramirez hit a pair of RBI singles to key an early outburst against struggling starter Livan Hernandez, and Randy Wolf pitched the Los Angeles Dodgers past the host New York Mets for his first win in eight outings.
Phillies 9, Reds 6 Jayson Werth homered for the fourth straight game, Chase Utley hit an inside-the-park homer and host Philadelphia beat Cincinnati. Jamie Moyer (8-6) allowed six runs and eight hits in five innings, but Philadelphia's offense bailed him out again. The Phillies have averaged 8.1 runs in Moyer's wins.
Cardinals 5, Brewers 1 Joel Pineiro scattered three hits in his third complete game this year and Ryan Ludwick hit a three-run homer in a five-run eighth inning, rallying St. Louis over host Milwaukee.
Rockies 7, Braves 6 Pinch-hitter Garrett Atkins hit a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning, lifting host Colorado past Atlanta for their fourth consecutive victory. Ian Stewart started the rally by drawing a one-out walk, and Mike Gonzalez (3-2) then hit Chris Iannetta with a pitch. Gonzalez retired Carlos Gonzalez on a pop up before Atkins, batting for reliever Juan Rincon (1-0), lashed a double down the left field line to snap the third tie of the game.
