Tuesday's MLB results - Sept. 22

Tuesday's American League results

Mariners 4, Rays 3 — Jose Lopez hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning and Seattle beat host Tampa Bay, eliminating the defending AL champions from the postseason. Ichiro Suzuki had a two-run homer for the Mariners, who ended Tampa Bay's four-game winning streak. Miguel Batista (7-4) struck out three over two perfect innings before Mark Lowe pitched the ninth for his third save.

Blue Jays 6, Orioles 5, — Aaron Hill doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning and host Toronto beat Baltimore, the Orioles' sixth straight loss. Hill, who hit a solo home run, reached 100 RBI for the first time in his career. Shawn Camp (2-6) pitched one inning for the win.

Royals 5, Red Sox 1 — Zack Greinke bolstered his Cy Young Award credentials by holding Boston to two hits in six scoreless innings, leading host Kansas City to a victory. Greinke is 3-0 with a 0.26 ERA in his past five starts, allowing 18 hits and one earned run in 35 innings. With the stingy stretch, Greinke has lowered his major-league leading ERA to 2.08.

Twins 8, White Sox 6 — Michael Cuddyer hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth, and Matt Tolbert homered in the same inning as Minnesota defeated the host Chicago White Sox. The Twins won for the eighth time in nine games despite blowing two leads and getting a dismal start from Jeff Manship. Orlando Cabrera hit a two-run homer and Jason Kubel added a solo shot for the Twins.

Tuesday's National League results

Phillies 9, Marlins 3; Marlins 3, Phillies 0 — Anibal Sanchez allowed two hits in eight innings to beat Philadelphia for the first time in five career decisions, and host Florida's victory in the second game gave it a doubleheader split. Joe Blanton gave up two hits in seven shutout innings to outpitch Marlins ace Josh Johnson in the first game, which Philadelphia won. That reduced to five the Phillies' magic number for clinching the NL East.

Dodgers 14, Nationals 2 — Rafael Furcal drove in four runs, Hiroki Kuroda allowed four hits over six innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers had two big innings in a victory over host Washington. The Dodgers' sixth win in seven games lowered their magic number for clinching a postseason berth to three.

Braves 3, Mets 1 — Jair Jurrjens dominated a feeble New York Mets lineup again and Yunel Escobar hit a two-run single, sending visiting Atlanta to a win. The surging Braves kept up their late playoff charge, though their chances for a postseason spot are slim. Atlanta lost All-Star catcher Brian McCann to a bruised left wrist in the fourth. He was replaced by David Ross.

Reds 10, Pirates 4 — Scott Rolen had three hits and three RBI, Joey Votto had three doubles and scored three runs and Cincinnati beat host Pittsburgh, clinching the Pirates' third straight last-place finish in the NL Central. Pittsburgh (56-93) lost for the 21st time in 24 games, the Pirates' worst stretch since they lost 24 out of 28 from July 13-Aug. 15, 1985.

Cubs 7, Brewers 2 — Derrek Lee hit his 35th homer and drove in two runs to set a career mark with 109 RBI, leading the Chicago Cubs to a win over host Milwaukee. The Cubs won their third straight since suspending Milton Bradley for the season and Lee has continued his sizzling September. He's hitting .408 for the month and is 6-of-8 in this series with two home runs and six RBI.

Cardinals 11, Astros 2 — Joel Pineiro allowed five hits in seven effective innings, Yadier Molina hit a two-run homer and St. Louis inched closer to the NL Central title with a win over host Houston. Colby Rasmus added a solo shot as the Cardinals reduced their magic number for clinching the division to two. Pineiro (15-11) struck out four and threw only 87 pitches to win for the first time in four starts.
