Yankees utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr. received a cortisone injection in his left wrist.
Hairston left Wednesday's game at the Los Angeles Angels midway through an at-bat because of sharp pain after feeling a little pop. He said his wrist hasn't felt right since he injured it diving for a ball this season while playing for Cincinnati.
He was examined Thursday by hand-specialist Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser and had an MRI, which showed tendinitis. The Yankees said he is day to day.
Hairston, acquired July 31, is hitting .281 with two homers and 10 RBI for the Yankees.
Also Thursday, the Pittsburgh Pirates claimed 25-year-old right-hander Anthony Claggett off waivers from the Yankees. Claggett, obtained from Detroit in the Gary Sheffield trade in November 2006, had a 33.75 ERA in 22/3 innings over two appearances with the Yankees this year. He also was 7-7 with a 3.07 ERA in 34 relief appearances and five starts at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Pittsburgh cleared a spot on its 40-man roster by transferring right-hander Jose Ascanio from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list.
Around the league
The Kansas City Royals selected the contract of right-hander Anthony Lerew from Double-A Northwest Arkansas, activated righty Juan Cruz (shoulder strain) from the disabled list and placed left-hander Bruce Chen on the 60-day disabled list with a torn left oblique muscle. . . . The St. Louis Cardinals recalled shortstop Tyler Greene, third baseman David Freese, catcher Matt Pagnozzi and right-handed pitcher Josh Kinney from Triple-A Memphis.
On the sidelines
Houston Astros right-hander Alberto Arias had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. . . . Seattle Mariners first baseman Russell Branyan (back) took 35 swings off a tee. He might return to the lineup next week. . . . Boston Red Sox shortstop Nick Green (disk) is remaining in Boston to work with the team's physical therapist. . . . Detroit Tigers left-hander Jarrod Washburn had his swollen left knee examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles, but a decision was not made on treatment.
