NBA great Jordan at $800 million
Published on Saturday, Oct 03, 2009
From Beacon Journal wire services
Forbes says Tiger Woods has become the first athlete to surpass $1 billion in career earnings.
The magazine estimates that golf's top-ranked player crested the plateau when he earned $10 million for winning the FedEx Cup on Sunday.
Forbes reported on its Web site on Tuesday that Woods entered 2009 having earned $895 million since he joined the PGA Tour in 1996. Prize money, appearance fees, endorsement fees, bonuses and his golf course design business were calculated to have pushed him over $1 billion.
The magazine says former NBA great Michael Jordan and former Formula One driver Michael Schumacher, at $800 million and $700 million, respectively, are Woods' closest competition in career earnings.

Bernhard Langer, who also shot a 65, was tied with Loren Roberts (67) and John Cook (68) at 3-under 137.
• Vaughn Taylor managed to keep his tunnel vision. A brief patch of good weather helped immensely. Taylor shot his second consecutive 67 to take a 1-shot lead after two rounds in the Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, N.Y. He was at 10-under 134 after another cold and wet day at Atunyote Golf Club. Tied for second were Matt Kuchar (68), rookie Leif Olson (69), and Nicholas Thompson (67).

The announcement comes three days before Norman is to captain the International team at the Presidents Cup in San Francisco, where wives of the captains take on a visible role.
Basketball: Instant replay expanded
• NBA referees will be able to use instant replay on shot-clock and out-of-bounds calls this season. The NBA Board of Governors approved the expanded use Friday. Referees will be permitted to check replay to see if the 24-second clock expired before a successful shot or a foul. They also can consult video during the last 2 minutes of regulation and any overtime period to determine which player last touched the ball prior to it going out of bounds.
• The Milwaukee Bucks cut Dominic James to allow the former Marquette standout the chance to play in Europe.
Tennis: Sharapova advances to final
