Leader of group seeking to purchase Rams says host complicated efforts
Published on Thursday, Oct 15, 2009
Associated Press
Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has been dropped from a group seeking to buy the St. Louis Rams.
Limbaugh was to be a limited partner in a group headed by St. Louis Blues chairman Dave Checketts. Checketts said in a statement Wednesday that Limbaugh's participation had become a complication in the group's efforts and the bid will move forward without him.
Checketts said he will have no further comment on the bid process.
Limbaugh's bid ran into opposition within the league Tuesday when Colts owner Jim Irsay vowed to vote against him.
Steelers' Smith out
Playing for a month without Troy Polamalu was difficult enough for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Playing the rest of the season without Aaron Smith might be an equally big challenge for one of the NFL's best defenses.
On the same day Polamalu returned to practice after missing four games with a knee injury, the Pittsburgh Steelers scrambled to replace Smith, the run-smothering defensive end who was placed on the injured reserve list with a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.
This season, Smith has 13 tackles, two sacks and a blocked field goal. He is eighth in team history with 43 sacks.
First-round draft pick Ziggy Hood and longtime backup Travis Kirschke probably will get most of the playing time for Smith, starting Sunday against the Browns.
Court to hear case
The NFL asked a full federal appeals court to hear the case involving two Minnesota Vikings players who violated the league's anti-doping policy, saying the issue has to be settled to avoid different standards for players in different states.
Last month, a three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals essentially allowed Kevin Williams and Pat Williams to continue playing while the case proceeds in state court.
The panel's ruling, however, left two New Orleans Saints players who violated the same policy subject to suspension. The NFL has allowed Saints defensive ends Charles Grant and Will Smith to play, but contends a uniform policy is needed across the nation.
Bears rookie charged
Chicago Bears rookie offensive lineman Lance Louis is facing a misdemeanor assault charge for an altercation that happened while he was playing at San Diego State.
The City Attorney's Office filed the charge against Louis, and his arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 23 in San Diego.
Authorities say Louis assaulted SDSU teammate Nick Sandford in a team meeting room last fall. Sandford suffered a concussion, broken eardrum and fractured cheekbone.
The charge is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $10,000 fine.
Discussions tabled
For now, the NFL won't be creating an offseason window when teams can negotiate with free agents even before the players actually become available.
Team owners tabled discussions until the winter meetings next March, but the issue is not dead. Indeed, there is support for establishing a short period just before free agency begins, usually in early March, when teams can talk to, but not physically meet with or sign, players whose contracts have expired.
Around the league
The New England Patriots have signed linebacker Junior Seau. The 40-year-old Seau is a 12-time Pro Bowler. He is entering his 20th NFL season. . . . The Indianapolis Colts signed former Browns kicker Matt Stover, one day after Adam Vinatieri had arthroscopic surgery to remove a piece of cartilage in his right knee. To clear a roster spot, the Colts made a surprise move by waiving starting defensive tackle Ed Johnson. . . . The Chargers released starting strong safety Clinton Hart in order to sign defensive tackle Ian Scott. . . . Bills linebackers Kawika Mitchell and Marcus Buggs have been placed on injured reserve allowing Buffalo to add two players to its banged-up defense. The Bills confirmed that they signed linebacker Chris Draft, a 10-year veteran, and fifth-year safety Todd Johnson. . . . The Oakland Raiders re-signed offensive lineman Langston Walker and waived fullback Oren O'Neal with an injury. . . . After losing one starter after another, the Buffalo Bills were buoyed after safety Donte Whitner and linebacker Paul Posluszny returned to practice. Both have a chance to play Sunday, when Buffalo (1-4) plays the Jets (3-2). . . . Running back Kory Sheets has been signed by the Miami Dolphins off the San Francisco 49ers' practice squad. Sheets took the roster spot of running back Patrick Cobbs, who was placed on injured reserve with a left knee injury. . . . Peyton Manning's sore left knee is no longer an issue for the Colts. The three-time league MVP, who said he needed medical treatment on the knee Sunday night, gave himself a clean bill of health. . . . Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer went through a full practice, an indication that his sprained thumb won't be a problem this week. . . . Minnesota Vikings receiver Percy Harvin has a shoulder injury. . . . Dallas native Allen Rossum signed with the Dallas Cowboys, only two days after being released from San Francisco.
