INDEPENDENCE: The flu bug continued to chomp away at the Cavaliers' roster Thursday.
While several players including LeBron James will probably return to action as the team swings through Texas for two preseason games against the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, three more have succumbed to the virus.
Forward J.J. Hickson and guard Andre Barrett were diagnosed with flulike symptoms and will not travel with the team this weekend. Forward Jawad Williams, who is suffering the same effects, will make the trip.
''I don't want anyone to get sick,'' a raspy-voiced James said at Cleveland Clinic Courts on Thursday. ''If this is the time when the flu bug or whatever you want to call it is going to hit our team, I'm glad that it's happening now, especially for myself.''
It's happening despite the fact that the team had been given flu shots on Media Day. James, Darnell Jackson and Coby Karl all tested positive for Influenza A. H1N1 (swine flu) is a strain of that particular version of the flu.
Coach Mike Brown said that the incident hasn't disrupted practices, saying it's one of the reasons that a team can have up to 20 players on the preseason roster.
''It's preseason, so you don't worry about it too much. You just want the guys to rest and get themselves right before coming back,'' he said. ''Obviously, we want to win every game and we want everybody out here all the time, but sometimes to give a guy a break or two is not a bad thing.''
Overall, the team has taken a proactive stance, said Tad Carper, senior vice president of basketball communications. Everyone within the Cavs organization is being treated.
''Obviously, we have a world leader in the Cleveland Clinic that puts us in a place of comfort moving forward,'' he said, ''so we're comfortable that we've got a group of people and a group of organizations around us that are able to guide us along this path.''
James who spent two days at home in bed, refused to hold his two young sons and drank a gallon of water a day said that players are taking steps themselves.
''It's hard to stay away from each other on this team. People are always messing with you, so you come back around, it's like you got the cooties,'' he joked. ''They don't want to be around you.''
On its Texas trip, the team will have 11 yes, 11 players on the injury list. James, Jackson and Karl have been upgraded to probable.
WEST UPDATE Delonte West will make the trip to Texas with his teammates, but his status for the game remains uncertain. Coach Brown said he didn't know whether West would see any game action.
''Again, that's something [General Manager] Danny [Ferry] is handling,'' he said. ''When he and Danny get it clear when he's going to play, then he'll play.''
