Flashes' defense tames Bobcats

By Associated Press

ATHENS: Kent State freshman Spencer Keith threw for 283 yards and two touchdowns to lead Kent State to a 20-11 victory over Ohio University on Saturday.

Keith was 23-for-38 and threw fourth-quarter touchdown passes of 3 and 15 yards to freshman Tyshon Goode as the Golden Flashes (4-4, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) took a 20-3 lead.

Kent State dominated defensively, holding Ohio (5-3, 3-1) to minus-9 yards rushing and 164 yards of total offense. The Golden Flashes had seven sacks and 15 tackles for loss, intercepted three passes and didn't allow an offensive touchdown for the second straight game.

Junior safety Brian Lainhart had one of those interceptions to give him five on the season and 13 for his career.

He is tied for third on the school's all-time list. Lainhart has caused 14 turnovers in the last 15 games.

Junior safety Dan Hartman and senior cornerback Danny Saddler each had an interception.

LaVon Brazill scored Ohio's lone touchdown on an 87-yard punt return with 2:18 left in the game.

The Golden Flashes led 6-3 before Keith connected with Goode on a 3-yard scoring pass that capped a six-play, 57-yard drive.

Goode had nine catches for 105 yards. Kevin Hogan led Kent State with 2.5 sacks.

Sophomore running back Jacquise Terry had a career-high 110 yards rushing and has surpassed 75 yards in each of his five games since taking over for the injured Eugene Jarvis.

The seven sacks are Kent State's highest total since a 1994 game against Ohio.

This is the first time Kent State has won three of its first four Mid-American Conference games since 1986.

Zips suck. Bobcats suck less. The flashes suck about the same as the bobcats. Only in the MAC would any of these three teams NOT be last in their conference. The MAC is horrid.

UAEngineering: My mama always taught me that if you can't say something nice about someone don't say anything at all. Too bad your mama didn't teach you any manners.

Even a blind black squirrel golden flash finds an acorn, err, win, once in a while. . .

United Arab Emirates, Go suck some oil! It`s really nice to be winning instead of losing in a horrid MAC. The MAC may be weak but I`d rather be 3-1 in the MAC than be in Akron`s position. If Akron beats Kent in a couple of weeks then you can gloat.......until then quit crying. The master bard strikes again! I knew you would come through again.

The MAC is what it is. But who cares. Kent will be playing meaningful football in November while the Zips are thinking about another helping of turkey and potatoes.

I'm very happy and proud for my Flashes. Who would have thought, the team would lose its top offensive player and starting Qb, and somehow emerge as a contender. If we had only held on against Boiling Green we would be in first and undefeated. Well, that's what we'll have to do the rest of the season. Kent rules!
