NBA notebook: Cavs, Celtics, Lakers help set TNT record

Cavs, Celtics, Lakers
help set TNT record

The doubleheader featuring title contenders Boston, Cleveland and the Los Angeles Lakers produced Turner television's most-watched opening night in its 26 years of airing the NBA.

TNT drew nearly 3.7 million viewers Tuesday for the Celtics' 95-89 victory over the Cavaliers, followed by the Lakers' 99-92 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. That was a 43 percent increase over the 2.6 million that watched last year's opening-night doubleheader.

Overall, it was TNT's most-watched doubleheader since Feb. 2, 1996, a night that was anchored by a Chicago Bulls-Lakers showdown.

TNT drew a 2.3 U.S. household rating Tuesday.

NUMBER RETIRED — Saying he was ''overwhelmed,'' Tim Hardaway beamed Wednesday night as he watched his No. 10 jersey raised to the rafters by the Miami Heat, never to be worn again.

With about 50 family and friends looking on, including the other two parts of the famed ''Run TMC'' trio — Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin — that he first captured NBA acclaim with, Hardaway's oversized jersey was hoisted skyward before Miami opened its season against the New York Knicks.

His is the second Heat jersey to be retired: Alonzo Mourning's No. 33 was hoisted last season.

AROUND THE LEAGUE — The Orlando Magic waived reserve forward Linton Johnson III. . . . Utah Jazz guard/forward Kyle Korver is recovering from surgery to remove a bone spur in his left knee. . . . The San Antonio Spurs exercised the option on guard George Hill's contract for next season. . . . Defensive stopper Thabo Sefolosha signed a four-year contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
