CUYAHOGA FALLS: The Walsh Jesuit girls soccer team continued its dominance in postseason play Thursday night with yet another shutout.
Walsh defeated visiting Solon 3-0 behind an attack-oriented offense and a swarming defense to win the University Heights Division I district final.
Junior midfielders Elizabeth Bollinger and Kelsey Smigel and sophomore midfielder Christen Westphal each scored a first-half goal for Walsh, who finished the regular season ranked No. 3 in the Ohio Scholastic Girls Soccer Coaches Association Poll.
''We had a really good first half,'' Walsh coach Dino McIntrye said.
''We went right at them, created a lot of chances and at 3-0 we put the game away.''
The Warriors have outscored their three postseason opponents Parma, Parma Padua and Solon by a combined score of 12-0.
Walsh will play Jackson in a regional semifinal Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School. Jackson defeated Hudson 2-1 Thursday night.
Walsh improves its record to 15-0-2, and Solon concludes its season at 8-11-1.
Bollinger's goal gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead with 18:16 remaining in the first half. Bollinger's goal came from about 20 yards away on the left side and went into the left side of the net.
''We were able to score early and take advantage quickly,'' Bollinger said. ''I think after we got the second goal, there was no way we were going to lose.''
The Warriors' lead grew to 2-0 after Smigel scored a goal from about 10 yards away with 15:34 left in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Alyson Smigel, Kelsey's younger sister, was credited with an assist on the goal.
''We were really confident in the beginning,'' said Kelsey Smigel, who leads Walsh's 4-4-2 attack with 20 goals and 12 assists this season.
''We came out in the first half and showed them that we were ready to play.''
Westphal extended the Warriors' lead to 3-0 with 11:01 to go in the first half with a goal from about 20 yards away. Westphal's goal came from the left side and was originally intended to be a crossing pass.
Walsh junior goalkeeper Erin Flynn got the shutout.
Sophomore Katie George, junior Alexis Gable, junior Brianna Kanz and senior Alexandra Stec were the Warriors starters defensively. Sophomore Julie Walker contributed as a reserve.
Solon coach Dave FitzGerald said the Comets had lost seven games by one goal and ''we're rebuilding this year after losing several seniors to graduation from last year.''
Jackson defeated Walsh 1-0 in a regional semifinal last season at Brecksville that ended with a second overtime. Walsh had beaten Jackson the previous three years in the postseason.
