Red Sox pass on Varitek, Gonzalez
Published on Tuesday, Nov 10, 2009
The Red Sox exercised their $7.7 million option on Victor Martinez and declined options on Jason Varitek and Alex Gonzalez on Monday.
Boston also agreed to a $5 million, two-year contract with 43-year-old knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, replacing a perpetual $4 million annual club option.
The moves on the options were expected after Boston obtained Martinez from the Indians on July 31 and he replaced Varitek as the starting catcher. The club option for Varitek, 37, was worth $5 million, but he can stay with the team if he exercises his $3 million player option.
The Red Sox also could try to keep Gonzalez at shortstop for less than the $6 million option. He receives a $500,000 buyout.
Martinez and Gonzalez, 32, played well for the Red Sox while Varitek struggled offensively for the second straight season. Wakefield was sidelined most of the second half with a back injury after making the All-Star team for the first time.
Baseball: Rays take Crawford option
• The Tampa Bay Rays have exercised their $10 million option on All-Star Carl Crawford. The team also declined $2 million options on left-handed reliever Brian Shouse and backup catcher Gregg Zaun. The 28-year-old Crawford was the MVP of this year's All-Star game.
• World Series MVP Hideki Matsui became a free agent along with New York Yankees teammates Johnny Damon, Eric Hinske, Jose Molina and Xavier Nady.
• The Brewers have reinstated second baseman Rickie Weeks and relievers Mark DiFelice and David Riske from the 60-day disabled list.
College: Memphis fires football coach
• Memphis fired coach Tommy West, saying the school wants to go in a different direction after the season. Athletic Director R.C. Johnson said he asked West to stay through the end of the season.
• Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount, who was suspended for the season after punching a Boise State player in the wake of the season opener, has been allowed to rejoin the Ducks.
• Western Kentucky fired David Elson, though he will finish out the remainder of a horrific season in which the Hilltoppers (0-9, 0-5 Sun Belt Conference) have struggled to make the transition to major college football.
NHL: More join hall of fame
• The Hockey Hall of Fame's class of 2009 has received its rings. Steve Yzerman, Luc Robitaille, Brian Leetch, Brett Hull and New Jersey Devils executive Lou Lamoriello picked up their jewelry during a morning ceremony at the hall.
• Left wing Ben Eager (concussion) was activated from injured reserve by the Chicago Blackhawks.
• The Anaheim Ducks have reassigned goalie Justin Pogge to the minors, clearing the way for Jean-Sebastien Giguere's return. Giguere hasn't played since Oct. 24 while resting a groin injury.
• Minnesota Wild right wing Petr Sykora has a concussion and is out indefinitely. Sykora took a hit to the head in Saturday's win over the Dallas Stars.
• Calgary forward Curtis Glencross was suspended three games because of a high hit he put on Chris Drury of the New York Rangers.
Other: Cohen out of Skate America
• Sasha Cohen's comeback has taken another setback. The Olympic silver medalist withdrew from Skate America, saying she is still battling the tendinitis in her right calf that forced her to drop out of last month's Trophee Eric Bompard.
• Tennis player Marat Safin of Russia extended his career by at least one more round, saving three match points to beat French qualifier Thierry Ascione 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3) at the Paris Masters.
Correction
• Two Cuyahoga Falls cross-country runners were omitted from the results published in Sunday's Beacon Journal. Kayleigh Scourfield finished 53rd in 19:47.07 and Allison Hainer finished 97th in 20:33.86 in the Division I race.
