Suzuki, Hunter win ninth time in row
Published on Wednesday, Nov 11, 2009
Derek Jeter sure is stuffing his trophy case.
The steady Yankees shortstop won his fourth Gold Glove on Tuesday, joining New York first baseman Mark Teixeira among the American League players rewarded for fantastic fielding.
''I've always taken a great deal of pride in my defense, and being honored with a Gold Glove is an accomplishment I will never overlook,'' Jeter said in a statement.
Los Angeles Angels center fielder Torii Hunter and Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki both won for the ninth straight season. First-time winners included Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria, Baltimore outfielder Adam Jones and Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle.
Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer and Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco each earned their second award.
Rawlings has presented Gold Gloves annually since 1957. Managers and coaches vote on players in their own leagues before the regular season ends, but they may not select members of their own teams. National League winners will be announced today.
It's been a banner year for Jeter, who combined with Teixeira to help lead the Yankees past Philadelphia last week for the franchise's 27th World Series title.
In addition to his fifth championship ring, Jeter also took home baseball's Roberto Clemente Award for excellence on the field and in the community, and his second Hank Aaron Award as the AL's top hitter. In September, he broke Lou Gehrig's club record for hits.
More baseball: GMs delay replay vote
• At their meeting in Chicago, baseball general managers failed to take a vote on expanding instant replay following a postseason filled with blown calls by umpires.
• The Pittsburgh Pirates purchased the Class-A Florida State League team located in Sarasota, Fla., and are moving it to nearby Bradenton, their longtime spring training site.
Hockey: Sabres' Mair clears waivers
• Veteran Sabres forward Adam Mair cleared waivers and will remain with Buffalo. Coach Lindy Ruff said he's electing to keep Mair in Buffalo as an extra forward rather than send him to the minors.
• Canucks star goaltender Roberto Luongo returned to the roster for Vancouver's game against the St. Louis Blues after missing two weeks with a broken rib.
• Chicago Blackhawks center Dave Bolland had surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back and will be out for three to four months.
Golf: Faldo is now a knight
• Nick Faldo was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for a career in which he won six majors and captained Europe's Ryder Cup team.
• Cristie Kerr shot 4-under 32 on the back nine to lead the LPGA to the win in the Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge in Henderson, Nev. The LPGA team of Kerr, Suzann Pettersen and Natalie Gulbis had a combined score of 6 under on the final nine holes to beat the PGA Tour team of Stewart Cink, Fred Couples and Bubba Watson by 2 strokes and win $300,000.
Soccer: Sounders forward honored
• Major League Soccer named Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero the 2009 MLS Newcomer of the Year.
• U.S. national team forward Charlie Davies was released from a Washington hospital nearly a month after a car accident.
• Goalkeeper Robert Enke, 32, who played for the German club Hannover and was expected to play for Germany at the World Cup, died after being hit by a train in what police suspect is a suicide.
Other: Boxer to defend titles in Ohio
• Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will defend his titles next month against Miguel Espino, in Pavlik's first fight since February. Trainer Jack Loew said that Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs) signed the contract Monday for a Dec. 19 bout at the Beeghly Center at Youngstown State University in Pavlik's hometown.
• Michael Phelps finished third in the 100-meter medley at a World Cup short-course meet in Stockholm after missing out on two other finals earlier in the day.
• Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nikolay Davydenko won second-round matches at the Paris Masters to stay in contention for the ATP World Tour Finals. Tsonga defeated Albert Montanes of Spain 6-1, 7-5, and Davydenko cruised past Benjamin Becker of Germany 6-2, 6-1.
