Audit shows practice time not tracked
Published on Tuesday, Nov 17, 2009
College football's winningest program just took another hit off the field.
The University of Michigan released embarrassing details of an internal audit Monday that discovered Rich Rodriguez's team failed to file forms tracking how much time players spent on football during the 2008 season his first and the offseason last spring.
Perhaps coincidentally, the NCAA and the school are investigating the program about similar issues. The NCAA sent the school's president a notice of inquiry last month, saying it plans to complete its investigation by Dec. 31.
''I don't know what the NCAA is going to find,'' athletic director Bill Martin said in an interview with the Associated Press on Monday, before the audit was released. ''I do know this is not academic fraud or gambling.
''I'm not involved with the investigation. It's being handled by our general counsel. We're the ones who picked up the phone to call the NCAA about this.''
The audit was completed months ago, but the details surfaced during Ohio State week because they are part of the agenda for Thursday's board of regents meeting.
Rodriguez has said he and his coaches know and follow NCAA rules.
University spokeswoman Kelly Cunningham said Rodriguez would not make a statement about the audit, saying he and school officials are limited in what they can say because of the investigation.
The Wolverines started the season with four straight wins, but have now lost six of seven.
If Michigan doesn't upset the ninth-ranked Buckeyes on Saturday at home, it will fail to quality for a bowl for a second straight season under Rodriguez after enjoying a postseason streak that lasted three-plus decades.
More football: Tomey retiring
• San Jose State coach Dick Tomey announced he was retiring from coaching, effective following San Jose State's game against Louisiana Tech on Dec. 5.
• Members of the military and the United Auto Workers, as well as Michigan's unemployed, have a chance to attend the Mid-American Conference championship game at Ford Field for free. A total of 10,000 free tickets to the Dec. 4 game will be distributed on Nov. 21 at the Detroit stadium. Anyone with a UAW badge, military identification card or Michigan unemployment benefit card can collect two free tickets each while supplies last. In addition, about 2,500 tickets have been distributed free to Detroit-area youth and charitable organizations.
• UNLV fired coach Mike Sanford after five losing seasons, a 15-43 record.
• Two of three Tennessee freshmen players charged last week in an attempted armed robbery have been dismissed from the team. Coach Lane Kiffin said Monday wide receiver Nu'Keese Richardson, 18, and defensive back Mike Edwards, 18, were permanently dismissed from the team, while former starting safety Janzen Jackson, 18, will continue to be barred from team activities while Kiffin awaits more information in his case.
• Boise State tight end Richie Brockel is expected to miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. Brockel, who has eight catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns this season, injured his left foot in the sixth-ranked Broncos' 63-25 blowout over rival Idaho on Saturday. Coach Chris Petersen declined to provide details of the injury, but said the senior was undergoing tests Monday.
• California star tailback Jahvid Best will not play in the Big Game against Stanford this week as he recovers from a concussion.
Other: Horse trainer dies
• Bobby Frankel possessed a gift for coaxing top performances out of ornery, high-strung thoroughbreds, a gruff Hall of Fame trainer who was hard in his dealings with humans but gentle with the animals in his barn. Frankel died of cancer Monday at his home in Pacific Palisades, jockey agent Ron Anderson said. He was 68.

Imagine that...Michigan being investigated for excessive practice times (sorta like working overtime and not getting compensated ) and now can't find the records....as a Buckeye fan, I sure hope they don't fire him...
