Men: Kent State 70, Youngstown St. 61
Flashes outshoot Penguins for victory

Beacon Journal staff report

Tyree Evans scored 18 points and Justin Greene contributed 17 points to guide visiting Kent State to a 70-61 win over Youngstown State Wednesday at the Beeghly Center.

Rodriquez Sherman had 15 points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals in 34 minutes for the Golden Flashes (3-1), who were playing their fourth game in six days.

KSU played without Chris Singletary, who was ruled out indefinitely Wednesday due to a knee injury from Sunday's overtime loss to Wisconsin-Green Bay. Singletary is expected to have surgery Friday on a meniscus tear and will miss at least two to six weeks and possibly longer.

Evans made 7-of-10 shots from the floor and also had three steals in 34 minutes.

Greene grabbed five rebounds and converted 5-of-10 shots from the field and 7-of-8 free throws.

Anthony Simpson had 12 points and six rebounds for KSU.

KSU shot at a higher percentage from the field, beyond the 3-point arc and from the free-throw line. The Flashes made 7-of-12 3-pointers, with Evans making 4-of-5, Sherman 2-of-3 and Simpson 1-of-2.

Sirlester Martin and Vytas Sulskis each scored 15 points for the Penguins (2-2). Martin had seven points and Sulskis tallied six rebounds. DeAndre Mays scored 14 points for YSU.

KSU led 37-34 at halftime.

Each team committed more turnovers than assists.

KSU will host Rochester (Mich.) on Sunday at 7 p.m.
