Arrested in Phoenix, former Browns player allegedly owes $26,000
Published on Friday, Nov 27, 2009
Associated Press
Former Browns offensive lineman Ross Verba has been arrested on suspicion of failing to pay a $26,000 gambling debt to a Las Vegas resort.
Clark County prosecutors say Verba, 36, was arrested in Phoenix this week on a Nevada arrest warrant.
Verba is charged with three counts of writing bad checks to the Palms in January 2008.
Prosecutors say Verba is fighting extradition to Nevada and remained in jail.
In 2007, Verba was arrested on bad check charges for allegedly failing to pay for $50,000 in markers at Wynn Las Vegas. Those charges were dismissed after he paid off the debt.
Verba was a first-round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers in 1997. He played four seasons with Green Bay and four seasons with the Browns before inking a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions in 2006.
Steelers look at QBs
The Pittsburgh Steelers have met with experienced quarterbacks Patrick Ramsey and Todd Bouman, a sign that injured backup Charlie Batch might be out longer than the team first expected.
Batch broke his left wrist in Kansas City on Sunday, leaving second-year quarterback Dennis Dixon as the only backup to starter Ben Roethlisberger on the 53-man roster.
Roethlisberger suffered his fourth concussion in four years while being tackled Sunday during Pittsburgh's 27-24 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Former Pitt quarterback Tyler Palko is on the practice squad.
Batch had surgery on Wednesday and was expected to be out two to four weeks.
Ramsey was cut by Tennessee last month. Bouman, a former Vikings backup, played briefly for the Baltimore Ravens last season.
Woodson helps hospital
Charles Woodson wants to be known as more than a football player.
Donating $2 million to the new University of Michigan Mott Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital gives him a chance to do that.
The school announced Woodson's gift on Thanksgiving before he played for the Green Bay Packers against the Detroit Lions.
Then, he intercepted two passes returning one for a score forced a fumble, recovered it and had a sack.
''It was a good day,'' Woodson said after Green Bay's 34-12 win in Detroit.
The money will support pediatric research by the Charles Woodson Clinical Research Fund in the $754-million, 1.1-million square foot hospital scheduled to open in 2012.
Pettigrew injured
Detroit Lions rookie tight end Brandon Pettigrew left Thursday's game against the Green Bay Packers with a left knee injury and did not return.
''I don't want to say too much until we get more tests,'' Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said. ''But it is something that we'll have to take a hard look at.''
Pettigrew was engaged with Packers linebacker Clay Matthews in the second minute of the game when his knee buckled. The injury was severe enough that several Green Bay defenders waved the Detroit training staff onto the field.
Pettigrew, who caught a touchdown pass with no time on the clock during Sunday's 38-37 win over the Browns, walked off the field with help. He was examined by trainers before being helped back to the locker room.
Turner practices
Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner practiced lightly for the second day, and backup Jerious Norwood was a full participant.
Turner missed last week's 34-31 loss to the New York Giants with a high ankle sprain, and coach Mike Smith listed the Pro Bowl selection as ''limited'' in practice.
Norwood missed the last five games with a hip flexor, but was in practice the past two days. Jason Snelling started last week and ran 25 times for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
Turner led the NFL with 376 carries in 2008 and finished second to Adrian Peterson with 1,699 yards rushing. He's averaging 5.0 yards per attempt this year on 165 carries.
The Falcons (5-5) host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-9) on Sunday.
Around the league
St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson did not practice for the second straight day while recovering from lower back spasms, but the team remains confident he'll play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Guard Richie Incognito, fullback Mike Karney (neck) and offensive tackle Jason Smith also did not practice. . . . Buffalo Bills starting cornerback Terrence McGee is practicing for the first time in more than three weeks since having surgery on his right knee, and could play against the Miami Dolphins this weekend. . . . Oakland Raiders defensive end Greg Ellis didn't play in the second half against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday because of swelling in his left knee and lower leg.
