Tigers done in in 4th as run is over

Massillon's postseason ends when Glenville puts win away in final quarter

By Jim Isabella
Special to the Beacon Journal

Glenville made history at the expense of Massillon.

Using the versatility of junior quarterback Cardale Jones, the Tarblooders overwhelmed Massillon in the fourth quarter to end the Tigers' season. The 31-17 victory by Glenville in the Division I state semifinal was before 10,248 fans at the University of Akron's InfoCision Stadium at Summa Field.

Glenville (13-1) will play Hilliard Davidson for the Division I state championship Saturday night at Fawcett Stadium in Canton. The Wildcats defeated Cincinnati Elder 24-20 in the other state semifinal.

Glenville becomes the first Cleveland public school to play for a state championship in football.

''You have to credit coach [Ted] Ginn. They played a great football game,'' said Massillon coach Jason Hall.

Massillon (10-4) got on the board first in the second quarter with a 12-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 30-yard field goal by Jeremy Geier with 9:07 remaining.

Glenville took the lead 21 seconds later on the first play from scrimmage after a 34-yard kickoff return by Chris
tian Bryant. Tarblooders senior Toney Foster went around left end and down the left sideline, broke through would-be tacklers at the Massillon 15-yard line and completed the 51-yard jaunt to the end zone for a 6-3 lead. Tarblooder holder Johnny Robinson bobbled the snap on the extra point attempt and could not run it in.

The Tarblooders showed their explosive capability and speed when junior quarterback Cardale Jones, who finished with 349 yards in passing and rushing, threw a perfect bomb down the middle to senior wide receiver Armis Greenwood. Greenwood fought off Tigers defensive back Tyler Miller the last five yards for the 45-yard touchdown with 2:26 left in the first half, completing a six-play, 86-yard drive. Jones' jump pass to Shane Bell for the 2-point conversion made it 14-3.

But as is their habit in big games, the Tarblooders can let opponents right back in. For the second time in the first half, Glenville muffed a punt at its own 26-yard line, this time by junior Shane Wynn, and senior Danny Huhn of the Tigers recovered it.

On the next play, Tigers senior quarterback Robert Partridge threw to a wide-open Bo Grunder over the middle for a 26-yard touchdown, and Geier's extra point cut the lead to 14-10 with 1:28 left in the half.

The Tarblooders came right back with a nine-play, 56-yard drive as Bryant booted a 28-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half for a 17-10 going into the locker room.

By halftime, Glenville had the advantage in total yards 236-144.

Massillon scored on its first drive on the third quarter, which took six minutes and covered 74 yards in 13 plays. Jake Reiman scored from 2 yards out, going behind the right side of the line, and Geier's extra-point kick tied the game at 17-17 with 5:53 left in the third quarter. Twice, the Tarblooders kept the drive going with crucial penalties — a pass-interference call and going offsides on fourth-and-4 when Geier was lining up for a 32-yard field goal.

''I thought they did a a good job of keeping their poise and getting back in the game,'' Hall said.

Glenville looked like it would get the lead back, but squandered a 12-play, 64-yard drive when Bryant missed a 29-yard field goal low and wide left with 40 seconds left in the third quarter.

But in the fourth quarter, the Tarblooders proved to be too much.

Wynn gave Glenville a 24-17 lead with 8:59 remaining in the fourth quarter on a 71-yard spectacular catch and run. The junior grabbed the short pass at his own 45 on the left side of the field, cutting across it and outrunning the Tigers' defenders to the right corner of the end zone.

Hall was philosophical about losing to the highly favored Tarblooders.

''We'll get back at it again in 30 days,'' Hall said.

Glenville made history at the expense of Massillon.

Looks like Massillon will need to poach some more Akron kids this offseason if they want to be able to match Glenville's athleticism in future matchups.

High School football still looks stupid at a college, on-campus stadium. However. I'm glad to see UA make money off the deal!

Jason.....???????????????????????????????? Man, that is a stupid comment. Voltman, those are MYTHICAL state champs, voted on. I once asked a Massillon fan if they`d prefer to win a championship by vote or win on the field? Her response was voted on!!! Is it any wonder the Tigers haven`t won one on the field.....where it counts. And dem Dogs have won three....one at Tiger stadium. Ouch!

Regardless, Massillon had a great season this year, and next year they'll be even better. They have a lot of players graduating, but there are a lot of good players who will be senior, and then the JV team is moving up, which only lost 1 game this season, so, GO MASSILLON!!!! You will always be #1 in my heart!

By the way, Glenville is a very, very good team and I hope they make State...they really deserve it. They are a very nice bunch of people too.
