Sophomore guard Anthony ''Humpty'' Hitchens and junior forward Brett McKnight each scored 16 points to lead the University of Akron to a 85-76 win over host Wyoming on Wednesday night in Laramie, Wyo.

Senior forward Jimmy Conyers had 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Zips (10-3) and junior guard Steve McNees contributed 14 points.

Sophomore forward Afam Muojeke led the Cowboys (6-7) with a game-high 19 points and sophomore guard A.J. Davis scored 18 points.

UA concluded the game with a 16-7 scoring run after the score was tied at 69-69 with 5:18 to go.

McKnight scored six points during the surge, senior Darryl Roberts added four points and McNees and Hitchens each made a 3-pointer.

''When the game got on the line, our guys made some big plays,'' UA coach Keith Dambrot said on a postgame radio interview on WARF (1350-AM). ''You could see that winning mentality at the end.''

The Zips led by as many as 12 points (40-28) with 3:40 to go in the first half and trailed by as many as seven points (62-55) with 10:31 to go in the second half.

UA led 42-37 at halftime.

Each team had 35 rebounds.

It's reassuring to know we can still compete with good teams. These guys would win the MAC West and compete for the MAC East crown, despite their record.

It's beginning to look like Akron and Kent again in the finals.

I dont know about Akron/Kent in the finals but definitely Akron/somebody.

It's hard to say at this point. Wacky things happen in the tourney, but it will most likely be Akron, Kent, Ohio, and Buffalo fighting for the top spot.

By the way, Kent is currently losing to 4-7 Northeastern. It's so hard to say who will actually compete when the conference slate opens up. It should be interesting!
