No. 756 is going to auction. Barry Bonds' record-breaking home run ball will be sold online, and fortunate fan Matt Murphy figures to be a half-million dollars richer.
The 21-year-old New York man said Tuesday he had no choice but to sell the ball several people told him he would be taxed on the souvenir just for holding on to it.
Bonds broke Hank Aaron's record of 755 with a shot into the right-field seats on Aug. 7 against the Washington Nationals.
Sotheby's/SCP Auctions will handle the sale at http://www.scpauctions.com from Tuesday until Sept. 15. Auction officials said the ball should bring at least $500,000.
Pena deal complete
The Nationals traded right-hander Emiliano Fruto to the Arizona Diamondbacks for prospect Chris Carter, who then was shipped to the Boston Red Sox to complete last week's deal that sent outfielder Wily Mo Pena to Washington.
Fruto was 3-9 with a 5.26 ERA in 18 appearances, including 16 starts, forTriple-A Columbus in 2007. Washington acquired him in the offseason in trading second baseman Jose Vidro to Seattle.
Carter is a lefty-hitting first baseman who was batting .324 with 18 homers and 84 RBIs at Triple-A Tucson. He becomes the player to be named from Friday's trade in which Washington got Pena and cash from Boston.
Around the bases
Atlanta Braves left-hander Chuck James went on the 15-day disabled list with tightness in the back of his pitching shoulder. The Braves called up left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes from Triple-A Richmond to take his place and also unconditionally released right-handed reliever Tanyon Sturtze. . . . The Cincinnati Reds recalled pitcher Kirk Saarloos and optioned pitcher Phil Dumatrait to Triple-A Louisville. . . . The Kansas City Royals and veteran second baseman Mark Grudzielanek agreed to exercise his $4.5 million option for 2008.
