BEREA: Browns starting cornerback Leigh Bodden ended up in the Cleveland City Jail on Wednesday after being arrested at Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport. He was accused of aggravated disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and various traffic offenses.
According to Lt. Thomas Stacho, public information officer for the Cleveland Police Department, Bodden was spotted about 6:30 p.m. driving a 2004 GMC Yukon the wrong way on the lower roadway for arriving flights. When a police officer instructed Bodden to stop, he didn't immediately, but complied with a second request, pulling his vehicle to the curb and walking away.
Stacho said Bodden was ordered to move the vehicle from the no-parking zone, but Bodden responded he was there to pick up some people. According to a source, Bodden was picking up his girlfriend and their two children, a 2-year-old daughter and a 6-week-old son.
Asked again to move and to provide his driver's license, Bodden said it was in the vehicle. When the officer confronted Bodden, Bodden became ''extremely verbally abusive,'' Stacho said.
''The officer called for assistance and a number of other officers responded and observed Mr. Bodden's tirade, including the use of numerous profanities,'' Stacho said.
The officers placed Bodden under arrest, which he resisted.
The police department had 24 hours to consult with the municipal prosecutor to decide whether to charge or release Bodden.
A Browns spokesperson said: ''We are aware of the situation that took place this evening with Leigh Bodden at the Cleveland airport and we are still gathering the facts at this time.''
Punter's back hurting
Browns punter Dave Zastudil came up with a sore back Monday, which prompted the team to work out five free agents Tuesday.
None were signed, and Zastudil practiced Wednesday on a limited basis. But coach Romeo Crennel doesn't know if the crisis has been averted going into Sunday's season opener.
''Any time you have a back (injury) you're always worried because backs are fickle,'' Crennel said. ''I'm worried about anybody's injury. If it does linger somewhere down the road then I have already looked at some guys and have a priority about who I might want to bring in.''
Crennel said if something were to happen to Zastudil during the game, kicker Phil Dawson would be the emergency punter.
In his first year with the Browns last season, Zastudil set highs for his five-year career in average (44.0) and net (38.4) yards per punt. The Bay Village native also turned in his second-highest number of punts inside the 20-yard line with 28.
Injury update
The Browns do not have to designate the status on injured players until Friday. Those limited in practice were right tackle Kevin Shaffer (concussion), defensive end Orpheus Roye (knee), fullback Lawrence Vickers (hamstring), left guard Eric Steinbach (knee), linebacker Andra Davis (ankle), defensive back Gary Baxter (knees) and safety Mike Adams (groin). Defensive lineman Simon Fraser (abscess) participated fully.
''There have been no significant headaches after a few days ago,'' said Shaffer, hurt Aug. 25 at Denver. ''They don't throw you in there and let you go full-go right away. So far things look good.''
Captains picked
As part of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's emphasis on leadership, the team elected receiver Joe Jurevicius, center Hank Fraley, linebackers Davis and Willie McGinest and Dawson as captains Monday. Safety Sean Jones and tight end Steve Heiden were added as co-captains. They will wear patches on their jerseys and represent the team to Crennel and to the community.
''I give the commissioner credit for understanding the value of leadership,'' hall of fame running back and Browns executive adviser Jim Brown said.
''We're behind the scenes pushing for the leadership group. I have encouraged players to develop that group, to discuss things. Let them take over the leadership and responsibility and they'll find more success that way.''
