Indians report
Sowers returns from stint in minors

With experience gained, lefty will start in Seattle

By Sheldon Ocker Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND: Left-hander Jeremy Sowers rejoined the Indians on Monday and can look forward to starting one game of the makeup doubleheader in Seattle on Sept. 26.

That won't erase the travails he endured in his second big-league season, but Sowers knows that some lessons are unavoidable and come with hardships attached.

Sowers began the season with the Indians, but in 12 starts, he was 1-6 with a 6.93 ERA and found himself optioned to Triple-A Buffalo, where he could work his way back to the big leagues in a relatively stress-free atmosphere.

At the time, Sowers wasn't sure what had happened to him after making a splash last year by compiling a 7-4 record and 3.57 ERA as a rookie.

''When it was happening, no, I didn't really understand,'' Sowers said. ''But I know now that it's just part of the game, something everybody goes through. It's just failure.''

What helped is that the other parts of Sowers' life were in order.

''As long as I didn't feel horrible about the other things,'' he said. ''There were a lot of other good things going on in my life. This was one thing: baseball.''

At Buffalo, Sowers made 15 starts and posted a 4-5 record and 4.10 ERA. But in his last nine starts, he was 4-1 with a 2.95.

''It was a bummer, but it made sense,'' he said. ''I think it helped to go down and get away from the size of everything up here. I was able to relax, take a step back and pitch in games where if I failed, it wasn't the end of the world.''

Sowers felt his fortunes turn in a start against Syracuse, not long after he was demoted.

''I just happened to pitch a good game and got some confidence back,'' he said. ''I had a couple of shaky games after that, but I was more like myself. . . . Now if I get in this situation, I'll have a better idea how to handle it.''

Sowers started two games in the Double-A Aeros' Eastern League playoff run, going 2-0 with an 0.68 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 131/3 innings. By that time, Tribe deep-thinkers already were leaning toward him as a starter against the Mariners.

''Jeremy handled everything about as well as you can in that situation,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''He went down and improved tremendously.''
