Solon at Hudson
Kickoff: 6:45 p.m. today.
Records: Each team is 3-1.
Coaches: Jim McQuade (35-8) is in his fifth season at Solon; Tom Narducci (76-54) is in his 13th season at Hudson.
Notebook: This is a cross-over game in the new Northeast Ohio Conference featuring former members of the Western Reserve Conference. It will not count in the standings. Divisional games that count will begin next week for all 18 teams in the conference. Solon opened with victories over Twinsburg and Massillon before losing to powerful Mentor in week three. On Friday, the Comets edged Mayfield 13-10 on an 18-yard field goal by Pat Jacob with six seconds left. Hudson saw its unbeaten season end Friday in losing at Strongsville 32-21. Senior quarterback Alex Gedeon of the Explorers completed 22-of-34 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns.
Cloverleaf at Tallmadge
Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday.
Records: Each team is 4-0, 1-0 in Suburban League,
Coaches: Kevin Gault (29-45) is in his eighth season at Cloverleaf; Joe Vassalotti (44-19) is in his sixth season at Tallmadge.
Notebook: Cloverleaf held Copley to 105 yards Friday in winning its Suburban League opener 10-0. Junior Keegan Conry, a transfer from Archbishop Hoban, scored the Colts' touchdown on a 9-yard run and also had two interceptions. Tallmadge, which is ranked first in the Beacon Journal poll and fifth in the Associated Press state poll in Division II, defeated host Green 24-14 last Thursday in its Suburban League debut. Junior tailback Tyler Fortner led the Blue Devils by rushing for 255 yards and three first-half touchdowns on 32 carries.
Revere at Wadsworth
Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday.
Records: Revere is 2-2, 1-0 in Suburban League; Wadsworth is 4-0, 1-0.
Coaches: Terry Cistone (19-26) is in his fifth season at Revere; Greg Dennison (90-42) is in his 13th season at Wadsworth.
Notebook: This game annually has a built-in story line because the two head coaches are sons of former coaching greats. Cistone is the son of ex-St. Vincent-St. Mary mentor John Cistone, and Dennison is the son of former University of Akron coach Jim Dennison. Revere opened with losses to Firestone and North Royalton, but has bounced back with triumphs over Springfield and Barberton. Senior tailback Quinten Brewer rushed for 250 yards on 38 carries Friday in a 28-14 victory over the Magics. He had an 80-yard touchdown run and two others of 1 yard. Wadsworth, which is No. 14 in the Associated Press state poll in Division I, defeated host Highland 36-21 on Friday. Senior tailback Dru Jones rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns in 33 carries. Ellet vs. Firestone
Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday at Rubber Bowl.
Records: Ellet is 3-1, 1-0 in the City Series; Firestone is 2-2, 1-0.
Coaches: Joe Yost (168-119-2) is in his 29th season at Ellet; Tim Flossie (6-8) is in his second season at Firestone.
Notebook: What a great year for the City Series. This is the first season in years when the league race is up for grabs. Ellet took the big first step last week with a 14-12 win over Buchtel, snapping the Griffins' 31-game winning streak in the City. Senior quarterback Chad Keppler ran for a touchdown and threw for another to lead the Orangemen. Keppler and Yost credited the offensive line of Tyler Dunagin, Cory Martin, Jack Wadsworth, Jeff Lakins and Brian Westfall for hanging tough against a physical Buchtel defensive front. The ground game was solid for Ellet; Josh Lewis rushed for 111 yards and Davon Roberson added 74. Firestone's ground attack is effective with Darshawn Thomas. In last week's 26-14 win over East, Thomas rushed for 167 yards on 22 carries, and the highlight was an 82-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The key for Firestone will be establishing not only Thomas but also senior running back Trevor Kennedy.
Garrettsville at Mogadore
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Records: Garrettsville is 2-2, 1-0 in the Portage Trail Conference; Mogadore is 3-1, 1-0.
Coaches: Steve Wyllie (18-7) is in his third season at Garrettsville; Matt Adorni (28-13) is in his fourth season at Mogadore.
Notebook: The winner of this game between last season's Portage Trail Conference County Division co-champions will be the favorite to take the 2007 divisional title. Garrettsville will look to avenge last season's 21-13 loss. The G-Men are led by senior linebacker/offensive lineman Chris Taylor. Senior running backs Cody Destro and Ryan Brodie are the main playmakers in Mogadore's offense, which leads the area in the following categories: total offense (440.3 yards per game), rushing (337.8) and scoring (38.3 points). Mogadore's defense has been tough as well, allowing 20 points in its past three games.
Hillsdale at Norwayne
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Records: Each team is 4-0, 1-0 in the Wayne County Athletic League.
Coaches: Tom Williams (18-26) is in his fifth season at Hillsdale; Kevin Maltarich (32-32) is in his eighth season at Norwayne.
Notebook: With traditional Wayne County Athletic League powers struggling this season, Hillsdale and Norwayne are in position to win the league after earning perfect records through Week 4. Hillsdale looks to exact revenge for a 36-6 loss to Norwayne in 2006. Senior linebacker Trent Kimball and senior free safety Clay Nelson are Hillsdale's leaders. The Falcons' defense, however, will have a tough task dealing with Norwayne senior tackle Jeremy Oller, who is 6 feet 4, 255 pounds, and his fellow offensive linemen. Senior fullback Travis Wilson and junior running back Tyler Robinson have combined to score 11 rushing touchdowns for the Bobcats.
Napoleon at St. Vincent-St. Mary
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Records: Napoleon is 4-0; St. V-M is 4-0.
Coaches: John Snoad is the coach at Napoleon; Dan Boarman (4-0 , 120-78 in 16 years at Copley) is in his first year at St. V-M.
Notebook: St. V-M's Boarman will be the first to tell you that defeating rival Archbishop Hoban last week 33-28 in a thrilling game that went down to the wire won't mean a thing if the Irish can't follow up that big win with a victory against Napoleon. At the same time, defeating Hoban should give the Irish a huge lift, given that they entered the game having lost nine in a row and 10 of 11 in that series. St. V-M, ranked seventh in the state in the first Division IV Associated Press weekly poll of the season, had to overcome a 19-0 second-quarter deficit against Hoban because of turnovers. St. V-M fumbled the ball four times; all led to Hoban touchdowns. Taking care of the ball is the priority this week. Offensively, St. V-M got a huge game out of running back Carnell Evans, who rushed for 217 yards and scored all five touchdowns. Napoleon, a Division I school in northwest Ohio, has wins over Defiance (8-7), Wauseon (41-35) Bowling Green (30-7) and Bryan (28-6 last week) . The Wildcats average 26.7 points. They are led by the senior running back tandem of Connor Pain and Tyler Flory.
North Canton Hoover at Boardman
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Records: Each team is 3-1, 1-0 in the Federal League.
Coaches: Don Hertler (89-37) is in his 12th season at Hoover; D.J. Ogilvie (7-27) is in his fourth season at Boardman.
Notebook: Hoover will try to keep its momentum rolling after a 17-7 win over Canton McKinley last week. Sophomore running back Erick Howard carried the ball 34 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns for the Vikings. Boardman already has matched its win total from last season. In 2006, Boardman suffered a 21-14 defeat at Hoover, so the Spartans are seeking revenge and trying to prove they can hang with the best teams in the Federal League. Senior defensive end Evan Klepec, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound Miami (Ohio) recruit, is an impact player for the Spartans.
