Tour title forfeited, 2-year ban likely
Published on Friday, Sep 21, 2007
Associated Press
Cyclist Floyd Landis lost his doping case Thursday when two of three arbitrators upheld the results of a test that showed the 2006 Tour de France champion used synthetic testosterone to fuel his spectacular comeback victory.
The decision means Landis, 31, of Murietta, Calif., who repeatedly has denied using performance-enhancing drugs, must forfeit his Tour title and is subject to a two-year ban, retroactive to Jan. 30, 2007.
''I am innocent,'' he said, ''and we proved I am innocent.''
Lead arbitrator Patrice Brunet and Richard McLaren voted to uphold the positive test, with Christopher Campbell dissenting.
In its 84-page decision, the majority found the initial screening test to measure Landis' testosterone levels was not done according to World Anti-Doping Agency rules. But a more precise and expensive test, performed after a positive is recorded, was accurate, the arbitrators said, meaning ''an anti-doping rule violation is established.''
If Landis doesn't appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport or appeals and loses he'll be the first person in the 105-year history of the race to lose the title because of a doping offense.
Pat McQuaid, leader of cycling's ruling body, said rules dictate that Landis can be stripped of his Tour de France title immediately. That makes Oscar Pereiro, who finished second last year, the official winner.
Football: Miami 34, Texas A&M 20
Kyle Wright threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns, Graig Cooper scored twice and the host University of Miami stymied No. 20 Texas A&M's high-powered offense in a 34-17 victory Thursday night. The win was only Miami's second in its last nine games against a ranked opponent dating to the end of the 2005 season. The Hurricanes (3-1) held the Aggies (3-1) to 38 yards in the first half in taking a 24-0 lead, ensuring their final Thursday night game at the venerable Orange Bowl would be a memorable one. Wright completed 21-o- 26 passes, finding Cooper with one scoring throw and Chris Zellner with another late in the third quarter to push the lead to 31-0.
Kevin Everett was to be transferred this morning to a Houston hospital to continue rehabilitation, less than two weeks after the Buffalo Bills tight end sustained a life-threatening spinal cord injury, and doctors said they believe he will be walking within weeks perhaps sooner.

For the second straight year, the NFL's Atlanta Falcons brought back kicker Morten Andersen, 47, to rescue their field goal and PAT game.
Golf: Drug testing to start
Golf begrudgingly joined the new world of sport Thursday when leaders from its most influential organizations signed off on an anti-doping policy with hopes of proving its players are clean. Drug testing could begin as early as next spring, although details such as when to test and any penalties are still being worked out.
Jeff Gove and Chad Campbell each shot a 7-under 65 on Thursday to tie for the first-round lead at the PGA's Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, N.Y.
Martin Erlandsson of Sweden shot a 9-under 63 to take the lead after the first round of the British Masters at Sutton Coldfield, England.

Ohio State must pay former men's basketball coach Jim O'Brien more than $2.4 million for his wrongful firing in 2004, the 10th District Court of Appeals in Columbus ruled. It also ruled O'Brien should not receive an additional $1.3 million that he had said he was owed. The majority ruling affirms a decision by the Ohio Court of Claims. The university has 45 days to appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court, which can elect not to hear the appeal.
