HARRISBURG, PA.: In the time it took the Aeros and host Harrisburg Senators to complete Thursday's season opener on Saturday evening, Aeros manager Mike Sarbaugh recovered from either food poisoning or the flu, and Senators reliever Eude Brito was promoted to Triple-A Columbus.
Sarbaugh was back in his hotel room all but dead to the world Thursday night, and Brito was on the mound in the ninth inning when umpires suspended the game with the score tied 5-5 and the field unplayable.
''I didn't even listen to it on the radio,'' Sarbaugh said. ''I was knocked out.
''Now we're not so sure it was food poisoning. It could have been a 24-hour flu. Whatever it was, it was bad.''
Sarbaugh got more time to recover when Friday's game was also postponed by rain and again the unfinished game was pushed back.
When the sun finally came out Saturday, the Senators needed just 13 minutes to finally put a victory in the books.
With left-hander Arnie Munoz on the mound replacing Brito, the Aeros went down in order in the top of the 10th.
Reliever T.J. Burton came back out for the Aeros after pitching the ninth inning Thursday.
Burton got out of a jam on Thursday night but wasn't able to do it again Saturday.
He gave up a single, sacrifice bunt and intentional walk before veteran slugger Luis Jimenez slammed a 3-1 pitch deep to right field for a three-run, walk-off homer that gave the Senators an 8-5 victory.
Jimenez came back to haunt the Aeros again in the second game another 8-5 loss with another two-run homer, this one off reliever Sung-Wei Tseng.
It came in the seventh inning and handed the Senators their final margin of victory.
''A lot of these young pitchers haven't pitched here before so they don't know much about (Jimenez),'' Sarbaugh said of the 10-year veteran who has spent the past four seasons in the Eastern League. ''They don't know who those guys are or where they come from.
''It's all a part of their development and learning, and right now they're learning on the job the hard way.''
Even before Jimenez's second home run, the long ball had become the theme of the evening.
''In the first few games of the season, hitters are real aggressive swinging the bat because they're excited that the games finally mean something,'' said Aeros first baseman/ designated hitter Michael Aubrey, who hit a three-run home run in the first game and was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the second game.
Wes Hodges and Ryan Goleski hit back-to-back home runs in a four-run third inning to give the Aeros a 4-1 lead.
The Senators rallied with another homer in the fourth a two-run shot run by Luke Montz that tied the score.
A two-run homer by Yurendell DeCaster off reliever J.D. Martin gave the Senators a 6-4 lead in the fifth.
Jimenez's blast finished the scoring for the Senators.
In his Double-A debut, Aeros starter David Huff lasted just four innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks. He struck out just one.
''I thought he threw the ball good, he just left a couple pitches up that they took advantage of,'' Sarbaugh said. ''But he battled and kept us in the game.''
