QB heads to California to play in PGA Tour's Bob Hope tournament

Derek Anderson will be surrounded by actors such as Luke Wilson, Samuel L. Jackson and Chris O'Donnell and comedians such as Jimmy Fallon, Kevin Nealon and George Lopez.
Known by his teammates as somewhat of a goofy free spirit, Browns quarterback Anderson might find the perfect stage when he tees off today in the PGA Tour's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. He'll be part of the celebrity field that will compete through Saturday at four courses.
Paired with a different pro each day, Anderson will start with Justin Leonard, followed by Jesper Parnevik, Tommy Gainey and Scott McCarron. ''Two Gloves'' Gainey, 32, a rookie who uses a baseball grip, gained fame on The Golf Channel's Big Break before qualifying for the tour on his seventh try.
Anderson, listed as a 5-
handicap, will be joined on his amateur team by 2006 American Idol winner Taylor Hicks (a 15-handicap) and Michael Constantine (8), not the actor of the same name. They will compete for an Orrefors crystal trophy and a miniature Eisenhower Trophy with the winner's name engraved.
They will play at SilverRock Resort, LaQuinta Country Club, the Palmer Private Course at PGA West and the Classic Club.
A native of Scappoose, Ore., Anderson tries to play golf every chance he gets in the offseason, but this will be his first celebrity event. He called the chance ''really cool.''
Tournament director Mike Milthorpe said Anderson's agent inquired in early December about the quarterback playing, but invitations had already gone out. Late cancellations got him in the field. Milthorpe said Anderson also submitted his name to play in an NBC event in Lake Tahoe in July.
''When we got his handicap, it was one of our better celebrity golfers,'' Milthorpe said.
The lowest handicaps belong to Sterling Sharpe (3), surfer Kelly Slater (4), Anderson, and O'Donnell, Jackson, rocker Alice Cooper and actors Gary Valentine and Thomas Gibson (6s).
