Browns offer duo contracts

Anderson, Lewis receive proposals; talks to heat up

Formal contract proposals have been extended to quarterback Derek Anderson and running back Jamal Lewis, the Browns confirmed Friday.

The Columbus Dispatch reported Anderson's offer was for three years.

General Manager Phil Savage said on his weekly radio appearance on WTAM (1100-AM) Thursday that he expected talks to heat up shortly before free agency begins Feb. 29.

''We're under way; we've had some exchange with parties this week,'' Savage told the station. ''There are no games to play between now and March 1, so I think both situations will carry on here for a couple weeks before it really gets down to some serious discussions.

''I think that's just the nature of getting ready for free agency. The hope is we will get both players back and signed up to be Browns beyond a year or two.''

Anderson will be a restricted free agent. He was 10-5 as a starter during the 2007 season, passing for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Lewis will be an unrestricted free agent. He rushed for 1,304 yards and nine TDs in 15 games this past season.

Savage will take some vacation time next week, as will coach Romeo Crennel.
