Browns linebacker Chaun Thompson couldn't pass up the chance to compete for a starting job with the Houston Texans.
The real lure was moving 31/2 hours away from his family in Mount Pleasant, Texas.
Cleveland's second-round pick in 2003 signed a two-year, $2.4 million contract with the Texans, his agent, Jeffrey Griffin, confirmed. The deal includes a $650,000 signing bonus.
Thompson could battle Kevin Bentley, the Browns' fourth-round pick in 2002, who left Seattle for a three-year deal in Houston.
''I'm not sure where they're going to play their linebackers,'' Griffin said. ''They're going to give him a chance to compete and Chaun wasn't sure that would have been the case in Cleveland. But I think the biggest thing was the chance to come back to Texas.''
Selected out of tiny West Texas A&M by former Browns coach Butch Davis, Thompson started 28 games in 2004-05, but had been primarily a special teams player the past two seasons.
''It was hard to leave Cleveland because all that hard work we put in paid off last season,'' Thompson told the Houston Chronicle. ''I've got a lot of friends in the organization and I wish them well, but this is a new opportunity for me.''
