Winslow's absence labeled as no big deal

Agent insists he'll show at mandatory session

By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA: Kellen Winslow's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said that the Browns tight end will attend veteran minicamp June 10-12 and training camp, and that he thinks that his absence from organized team activities (OTA) has been blown out of proportion.

Winslow underwent the fourth surgery on his right knee after the Pro Bowl. The Browns are going through their second of four weeks of OTAs and already have lost two potential starters, cornerback Daven Holly and right guard Ryan Tucker, to injuries.

Winslow has said he wants to renegotiate his contract that had three years remaining. Rosenhaus has a history of holding clients out of training camp, and some speculated Winslow was sending a message by his absence.

Speaking briefly on Sprint's YouTube channel, Rosenhaus said, ''These are voluntary activities. A player has a right to train on his own. Kellen is coming off of an offseason knee surgery and he is training with a very fine trainer in his hometown of San Diego.

''He will be at the Browns mandatory minicamp and he will be at the mandatory training camp. So what's the big to-do? There shouldn't be so much scrutiny on players who choose to work out on their own.''

Browns quarterback Derek Anderson didn't seem concerned about Winslow's absence. Speaking at the Akron Browns Backers Banquet on Monday, Anderson said, ''I'm not worried. I've talked to him, things are good. He's got things he's got to deal with. He'll be ready to go.''

Still missing

Among those not participating Wednesday were linebacker Willie McGinest (personal reasons), receiver Joe Jurevicius (knee, staph infection) and center LeCharles Bentley (knee). Browns coach Romeo Crennel said that to his knowledge Jurevicius had not undergone another procedure on his knee after the infection was first cleaned out.

Without Tucker

Guard Rex Hadnot, signed in March after spending the previous four years with the Miami Dolphins, stepped in for Tucker at right guard.

General Manager Phil Savage didn't rule out acquiring another backup tackle. Tucker spent most of his 11-year career at right tackle.

''We're going to explore it a little bit, we may have a couple players in for a workout here in the next few days,'' Savage said. ''But it's not pressing. Obviously this corner situation is going to take precedence over another offensive lineman.''

CBA reaction

Crennel on Tuesday's NFL owners' vote to opt out of the collective bargaining agreement after the 2010 season: ''There are three years for something to get worked out. With both sides working together, I think they can probably get it done. I don't think it does any good now to make any speculations about what might happen. The closer you get to the date, then you can talk about that more seriously.''
