Bentley on field with Browns

Savage glad to have him in Berea after two years. K2 and Willie McGinest also there.

By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA: After two years trying to recover from a devastating knee injury and subsequent infection, center LeCharles Bentley stepped on the practice field with the Cleveland Browns today.

Bentley passed his physical Monday night, General Manager Phil Savage said. The physical included running a series of 40-yard dashes.

Bentley tore his patellar tendon in his first practice in full pads with the Browns in July 2006. Complications from a staph infection resulted in four surgeries on his left knee.

''It has been two years. Obviously he has made a tremendous step to get out here at all,'' Savage said. ''You've got to tip your hat to the fact he wants to do this. Everyone was very pleased and pretty excited about what we saw [Monday] night.

''He has got a lot of pride . . . This is his hometown team. He has made a lot of progress and wants to give it a go.''

Savage said Bentley will participate in individual work, but whether that later will include 11-on-11 situations, ''I couldn't answer right now.''

Tight end Kellen Winslow and linebacker Willie McGinest, who had not participated in team drills earlier in the spring, also were in camp today.
