How he did it: Goodwin, an Olympic long jumper, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.27 seconds, the second fastest time since 2006. He just missed what the NFL regards as the record of 4.24 seconds by Chris Johnson (now a running back for the Tennessee Titans) in 2008.
Twitter posts by the NFL Network’s Mike Mayock and NFL.com’s Gil Brandt said several scouts’ stopwatches had Goodwin at 4.19 seconds. “So effortless,” Brandt tweeted. Goodwin also tied for second among receivers in the broad jump (11-0).
Goodwin, who stands just under 5-foot-9, came to Indianapolis with the goal of breaking the record in the 40, but also wants to show his route-running ability. “I have proved I have more than linear speed,” Goodwin said. “I have good hands. I get out of my breaks. I can run other routes than just a nine. I’m tough. I have taken on hits. I have blocked. I have even got MVP for blocking in one game and I didn’t even touch a ball.”
