BEREA: Backup quarterback Brady Quinn could get the bulk of the work when the Browns open the preseason Thursday night against the New York Jets.
Browns coach Romeo Crennel said he hadn't finished planning for the 7:30 p.m. game at Cleveland Browns Stadium, but he didn't expect to change his philosophy from his three previous years on how to use his starters.
''Generally, I play them about a quarter and maybe some into the second quarter,'' he said.
As for Quinn, a first-round pick in 2007, Crennel said, ''When we take D.A. out, we'll put Brady in, maybe a half.''
Starting quarterback Derek Anderson said he had no idea how much he would play and had no preference.
Judging by Crennel's remarks, fans who want to see starters will get a better look this week than in the preseason finale Aug. 28 at home against Chicago. But Quinn supporters might not want to miss the latter, especially since Cleveland has only three quarterbacks on the roster.
''I want to rest [the starters] in the fourth game, try to keep them healthy like everybody else does,'' Crennel said.
Parking alert today
U.S. Sen. Barack Obama will speak at Baldwin-Wallace College today, with the doors scheduled to open at noon. Those attending Browns practice from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. should be advised that parking in the B-W lots will be very limited.
Long catches
Derek Anderson's two passes of at least 50 yards to receiver Braylon Edwards highlighted Monday morning's practice. Edwards torched cornerback A.J. Davis on the first, a high rainbow, then Edwards went up over Davis and safety Nick Sorensen for the second.
Last season, Edwards caught 80 passes, 16 for touchdowns, but Anderson feels they can still improve their chemistry.
''He and I talk after each completion or incompletion,'' Anderson said. ''What I saw, what I thought, how his route was, where I threw the ball, just so he understands what I am thinking at all times. We had one today where I threw a 7 route to him and it was a little bit short and he adjusted to it.''
Injury report
Rookie linebacker Beau Bell sat out the evening practice with what Crennel described as a sore right knee. . . . After missing more than a week with a twisted knee, tight end Steve Heiden returned to practice in the evening session, but was limited. Also sidelined were safety Gary Baxter (knees) and tight end Kellen Winslow (hamstring). Receiver Kevin Kasper, receiver/returner Joshua Cribbs and fullback Lawrence Vickers (all with hamstrings) were back but limited. Defensive end Robaire Smith and linebacker Willie McGinest were among those rested in the evening session.
Brownies
In the morning, Quinn threw a nice bomb to rookie receiver Lance Leggett on the sideline, but defensive back Mil'Von James broke it up as they were falling. . . . Cornerback Eric Wright had a nice breakup of a Quinn pass intended for Travis Wilson in the evening session. Davis and cornerback Brandon McDonald had interceptions in seven-on- seven.
