BEREA: The Browns' list of training-camp rules might have gotten longer after star receiver Braylon Edwards was stepped on Saturday while jogging without shoes.
Edwards needed stitches to close the wound and spent the night in the Cleveland Clinic, coach Romeo Crennel said. He was released from the hospital Sunday.
The incident happened at the end of practice Saturday. According to a photographer who witnessed the incident, Edwards was running sprints in his socks when receiver Donte' Stallworth, wearing cleats, stepped on the back of his right heel. Edwards' foot was bloody as teammates came to his aid before the trainer arrived.
Edwards left the field on a cart, but did not appear to be in severe pain. He also had his left foot attended to during the practice, but didn't miss any time with the offense.
''Everything is pretty well fine other than the fact that he got stitches,'' Crennel said Sunday. ''He was in good spirits last night when I spoke with him and he's anxious to get back. We'll have to see how long it's going to take.''
Crennel said he had no timetable for Edwards' return. A Browns official said Edwards' injury is not considered serious.
''I never put a timetable on guys because you don't know,'' Crennel said. ''All I know is he's going to work to get back out here and he'll be back when he's ready.
''I'm always worried when a guy is not out here. He's [got] one of those nagging injuries. I know that he'll be back.''
Also in the nagging category are linebackers Antwan Peek and Beau Bell (arthroscopic knee surgeries), receiver Kevin Kasper (hamstring), guard Seth McKinney (ankle), tight end Steve Heiden (knee), tight end Kellen Winslow (hamstring) and fullback Lawrence Vickers (hamstring).
Crennel said he didn't see what happened to Edwards, who made the Pro Bowl last year and set the Browns' single-season records for touchdowns (16) and receiving yards (1,289).
''All I know is he got stepped on. They called for the trainer,'' Crennel said. ''When I turned around and looked he was on the ground.''
The Browns don't play again until Aug. 18 against the New York Giants at the Meadowlands. Some would argue Edwards doesn't need to make the trip, especially since his preseason highlight might have come Thursday night against the New York Jets.
His 2-yard touchdown catch from Derek Anderson had everyone buzzing. Edwards was looking inside, but spun around and caught the ball one-handed.
''That's how we've been working on it,'' Anderson said Thursday. ''When a corner tries to play high over the top of him, I try to throw it [to his] back shoulder and let him flip his hips and make a play. Most times he catches it with two hands, but it was preseason, a little bit for show.''
Third-year receiver Travis Wilson ranked the catch ''in the top five of all my years.''
Stallworth, acquired in free agency from the New England Patriots and a close friend of Edwards, saw the end of Edwards' touchdown.
''Pretty nice catch. But he's been doing that all camp,'' Stallworth said. ''He's primed to have a good year. He's working hard and will continue to be the good player he is. I'm going to keep pushing him. He wants to do some good things this year and I'm going to try to help him do that.''
