Have a backup plan

Injured Browns to sit out Thursday's game with Bears

By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

BEREA: Perhaps the Browns are just being cautious with Derek Anderson's and Brodney Pool's concussions.

Perhaps a pulled hamstring wouldn't keep Jamal Lewis from playing if this were the regular season.

Perhaps Sean Jones' swollen knee is nothing more than a swollen knee.

The latter might require the biggest leap. But it appears certain the Browns will have a limited cast of characters available for Thursday's preseason finale at home against the Chicago Bears and that backup Brady Quinn might take over again in place of quarterback Anderson.

They could be without starting safeties Jones and Pool for the second consecutive preseason game and Jones' status for the Sept. 7 opener against the Dallas Cowboys might be in question. His absence would thrust nickel back Mike Adams into the lineup at strong safety against the Cowboys.

Nick Sorensen, primarily a special teams player in his previous seven years in the league, has been playing in Jones' spot while Adams takes over for Pool.

Jones left practice midway through last Wednesday's session, watched from the sideline on Thursday and was among the six starters who sat out Saturday's 26-6 loss at the Detroit Lions.

''Sean has a knee swollen and it's a little bit better today than it was over the weekend,'' Crennel said Monday. ''We will keep working with him, trying to get that swelling down.''

Asked if Jones had an MRI, Crennel said, ''I think they always check everything out, but they have found nothing to my knowledge other than there is some swelling there.''

In his second year with the Browns, Adams has played in 53 career games over four years with 18 starts. Sorensen has played in 84 without a start. But he had a decent day against the Lions, recording four tackles (three solos), a tackle for loss, an interception and a pass defensed.

He and Adams are determined to show there would be no dropoff without Pool and Jones.

''I think every backup in this league has that mentality,'' Sorensen said. ''We could sit here for 20 minutes and name backups that ended up becoming stars and some guys become Hall of Fame players. Even the coach has to see that. If you don't think you can play, you shouldn't be here.''

Depth in the secondary has been a concern since cornerback Daven Holly went down in organized training activities with a season-ending knee injury. Cornerbacks Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald are in their second year, McDonald his first as a starter. Behind them are Adams and Terry Cousin, beaten out by Adams for the nickel role.

Cleveland (0-3) hasn't gone winless in the preseason since 1972. But that may be of little concern to a team that seems more intent on keeping what it has intact for the opener.

Anderson, Pool, Jones, Lewis, receiver Braylon Edwards (stitches in right heel) and receiver/returner Joshua Cribbs (high ankle sprain) did not appear at practice Monday. Linebacker Willie McGinest (groin) came out at the beginning, but did not finish. Crennel said any who missed again today would sit out against the Bears.

The most encouraging sign was the sighting of outside linebacker Antwan Peek (arthroscopic knee surgery on July 31), who watched all the drills in a jersey, shorts and baseball cap.

Of those with concussions, Crennel said Anderson was further ahead than Pool, who has had three in his four-year career.

Asked if it had reached the point that he might think about starting backup quarterback Brady Quinn against Dallas, Crennel said, ''I'll wait until next week before I make that consideration.''

Crennel still thinks there's time for the team to regroup when most of its missing parts return.

''We have 10 days after the Chicago game,'' Crennel said. ''If we can get some good work in those 10 days, I think the guys have enough experience and have worked together enough from last year that they will be able to jell.''
