Backup quarterback likely to start Thursday in preseason finale

BEREA: Brady Quinn joked that he was throwing to Braylon Edwards in Edwards' backyard and handing off to Jamal Lewis in the hallway.
Those two remain injured. But the Browns backup quarterback did spend time after practice Monday with receiver Donte' Stallworth, especially after they failed to hook up twice in the first quarter of Saturday's 26-6 preseason loss at Detroit.
They missed each other on four throws, including a bomb on the first play, negated by a defensive holding penalty on safety Dwight Smith. So Quinn and free agent signee Stallworth worked together for at least 15 minutes after their teammates went in.
''Yeah, especially when we're installing different stuff each week,'' Quinn said. ''You always want to work on some new routes. Coming into a short week, it can be tough at times to get down some of that stuff and get on the same page with guys running routes they haven't run before.''
On the heels of his first professional (if unofficial) NFL start, Quinn seems likely to get another in Thursday's preseason finale at home against Chicago. Starter Derek Anderson, who suffered a concussion Aug. 18 against the New York Giants, did not practice again Monday.
In Saturday's 26-6 loss at Detroit, Quinn completed 14 of 24 for 106 yards and a 69.1 rating, producing only two Phil Dawson field goals.
''I was inconsistent at times, really was streaky,'' Quinn said. ''There were times when I don't know how many completions I had in a row, then two or three incompletions. Obviously some incompletions came at bad times, on third downs, which you can't do.''
Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Quinn, ''did some good things and he did some bad things. Overall it wasn't enough for us to jump up and down about. But we still have confidence in his abilities. I know that he is going to try to make the most of this opportunity that is coming this week.''
A shaky outing against the Lions didn't damage Quinn's confidence.
''That's never changed,'' he said. ''Someone once told me you have to have bad games to learn how to deal with the good ones.''
Brownies
Offensive lineman Lennie Friedman (shoulder) and receiver Kevin Kasper (neck, concussion) also missed practice. . . . Linebacker Antwan Peek (arthroscopic knee surgery on July 31) on whether he'll be ready for the Sept. 7 opener: ''I'll be good to go. I'm doing a lot better.'' . . . Cornerback Damon Jenkins was waived. Four more roster moves must be made today to reach the 75-man limit. . . . Crennel's post-practice address was much longer than normal and he raised his voice in mid-session louder than usual. Special teams coach Ted Daisher also chastised his group for ''the worst kickoff return drill I've ever seen.''
