Workout with Phelps ups interest in Olympics for Browns' Edwards

By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

BEREA: Ever wondered what it would be like to practice with an Olympian?

As Braylon Edwards would testify, fuggetaboutit.

In the offseason, the Browns' star receiver swam with Michael Phelps when Phelps was training at Edwards' alma mater, the University of Michigan. Phelps won eight gold medals in Bejiing.

''Once. It wasn't fun,'' Edwards said Wednesday. ''First of all, he works out at 6:30 in the morning and you have to be in the pool by 6. It's too much swimming. I stopped working out after about 30 minutes and just started playing on the diving board.''

But his friendship with Phelps gave Edwards something to do after he was hurt Aug. 9, suffering a gash in his right foot that needed stitches.

''Because of the injury, I had to watch all of it,'' Edwards said of the Olympics. ''I did watch Phelps. Good to see him do that for Michigan and for the USA.''

Captains elected

In a team vote, the Browns selected six captains — quarterback Derek Anderson and center Hank Fraley on offense, linebackers Willie McGinest and Andra Davis on defense and returner Joshua Cribbs and kicker Phil Dawson on special teams. All but Anderson and Cribbs were among the five who served last year.

''It's a great honor,'' Anderson said. ''I try to make sure I'm a positive leader, a positive presence for all these guys. It's special.''

Brownies . . .

Receiver Donte' Stallworth was wearing a T-shirt sent to him by Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens.

It read ''icompete'' on the front and ''T.O. win'' on the back and also had Owens' number and signature on the sleeve. ''He's my boy, so I'm just messing around with the young secondary guys,'' Stallworth said. . . . Dallas coach Wade Phillips was cagey when asked if recently reinstated cornerback Adam Jones might play on offense. ''Well, we're not telling. He's working in defensively and we'll see him on returns and there's always a possibility that we could put him on offense,'' Phillips said. Dallas had three receivers on the injury report, and two did not practice — Miles Austin (knee) and Sam Hurd (ankle). Also sitting out were left guard Kyle Kosier (foot) and linebacker Anthony Spencer (knee). Fully participating were cornerback Terence Newman (groin) and receiver Isaiah Stanback (shoulder). . . . Anderson said he hung out with Dallas quarterback Tony Romo at the pool during the Pro Bowl, but they haven't taken their friendship to the golf course yet. ''He's better than I am, trying to make the U.S. Open. I'm not ready for that,'' Anderson said.
