Forget Browns angst: Go with Steelers

Coach Crennel leaves self open to question

By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sports columnist

Adopt the Steelers.

Embrace them. Mentally, at least. Bring them into the family and accept them and deal with them as part of your life.

Because the Browns have not given anyone a reason to embrace them, not since their return in 1999.

The Browns have had two good seasons. They reached the playoffs once, then a month later they blew up the team and that was the end of that.

Last season, the Browns went 10-6 and raised hopes for this year. Contract extensions were given out like Halloween candy.

Now, self-adoring ''stars,'' injuries, poor play, lack of depth and some downright inexplicable in-game decisions have the Browns losers of two games in a row at home.

This team that wanted to be an elite team?

It got embarrassed, twice, and showed an amazingly shallow recognition of some fundamental facts.

Let's consider one play — and yes, there are many from which to pick — and that's the fake onside/bloop kickoff following the field goal that made the deficit Sunday night against the Steelers 10-6.

The Browns did not line up properly. League rules call for at least four guys on each side of the ball. It's a safety thing.

The Browns didn't have the correct number.

This had to be something they practiced, prepared and planned on using.

Which means they didn't line up right through their preparations.

The Steelers, meanwhile, showed a clear understanding of the rules. When the Steelers saw the bloop kick, they signaled for a fair catch, a smart play that takes away the possibility of the kickoff team blowing up the receiver and recovering a fumble.

Adopt the Steelers.

Make them . . . ahem . . . ummm . . . yours? Heck, they do play the game the way the team in Cleveland played it a decade or two or three ago.

Just adopt the Steelers. It will eliminate all this angst about personnel and coaching decisions.

When coach Romeo Crennel got his contract extension in the offseason,
he said it meant he had better win this year.

I thought it was odd to be giving extensions to guys with two years left on their deal after one good year and two bad ones. But the Browns chose to do it. They have this habit of doing it, too. They gave an extension to Butch Davis after he had gone 5-11.

There's no security like coaching for the Browns.

Now people want Crennel's head. Fire him, they cry.

What sense does it make to fire a guy after you've extended his contract, and how in the world would it help to start over again? Again?

Crennel is the team's coach, and barring further meltdown, which does appear possible, he will be the coach in December and January.

After the season, who knows?

But that doesn't mean the coach has not left himself open to question. He has had three important times to choose between a field goal or a first down in the first two games, and every time he chose the opposite of the way I would have chosen.

The decision against the Cowboys, going for a field goal down 21 with 10 minutes left, I can't defend.

The decision at the end of the half against the Steelers? I disagree, but another football guy said that a coach has to know his team, and maybe Crennel felt that was his best chance to seize the momentum and take advantage of a scoring chance when conditions were hostile to scoring. OK, but I still would have kicked.

The decision in the fourth quarter Sunday night? OK, maybe. But bottom line is that with or without that field goal, Crennel was asking his defense to stop Pittsburgh and his offense to score a touchdown. I'd have tried for the first down.

It's a funny thing.

Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan went for two after a late touchdown Sunday, because he did not have confidence his defense could stop the San Diego Chargers in overtime.

Crennel did not go for it, because he had confidence in his defense.

Look who's the goat.

Crennel clearly is not helping his cause. And his players are not helping Crennel. They did not, as they say, have his back in either game.

We always hear that teams lose as a team. Well, the Browns have lost twice as a team. The decisions were odd. There were stupid penalties. The secondary is bereft, as is receiving depth. (The Steelers bring in Santonio Holmes, the Browns, Syndric Steptoe). The offensive line has not played up to last season's standard. The quarterback is uncertain. And the (alleged) standout wide receiver is too busy hosting celebrities and driving 120 mph to catch passes.

With the exception of Kellen Winslow and Jamal Lewis, who on the offense can be highlighted?

Enough of trying to push this rock up the hill. The Browns simply have not given anyone — from the guy watching TV in the living room to the people paying for all those club seats — anything on which to hang their hats.

It's time to adopt a team that plays hard, plays well and plays smart. A team that competes and understands the league and conducts itself like a real NFL team.

Adopt the Steelers.

Adopt the Steelers? That should be easy once the fake browns quit leeching off the city of Cleveland and depart for good. It can start with the local CBS affiliate showing the Steelers-Eagles game in place of the counterfeit squad origilally scheduled in that time slot.

Adopt the Steelers? Heck no! Thanks for the suggestion. Now here's one for you, Pat: go write for the Sacramento Bee. Then you'll have all kinds of "local" teams to switch allegiance to in the event that the current one doesn't win.

The Browns motto for the year was supposed to be something like "The Name on the Door Says Cleveland." Right now, the name on the door is "Losers." "Whiners." "Make-up Excusers." Other teams play hurt (see the Patriots). Other teams don't do dumb plays like the 4th qtr kickoff (see everyone but the Rams). Other multi-million dollar stars don't drop more passes than they catch (see any other multi-million dollar star not named Edwards). Other coaches have faith in their offense and defense to get the job done because they are professional and competent and well-coached (see everyone but the Rams). Oh well, at least the Browns scored twice as many points as the Buckeyes did this past weekend.

That "Sacramento Bee" post completely lost me. Made as much sense as some of Crennel's decisions.

The Sacramento Bee is a newspaper in California. My point was that if he's going to tell me where I should go with my allegiance, I'm going to tell him where he can go with his articles.

No surprise that you are getting blasted. As a fan of your work for several years I'm going to guess this was written tongue in cheek. Alas, this subtlety was lost on some of the posters here. As repugnant as it is, the Steelers are the type of franchise the Browns should strive to be. They are a model of consistency in all aspects - front office, coaching and performance on the field. For me these are just a few more reasons to hate them.

Ditto to Frank....I am a Browns fan through and through however if the Brwons want to be considered an elite team in the NFL then shut up and just play the game or go somewhere else! This is a great game and I am sick of the poor coaching, sub-standard player performance acting like we should be gratful for their presence. Just play the game like you love it! And you love the traditions and greatness of this market. At least Lebron plays hard and plays hard! Go Cavs! Sorry I digressed...That is why I am a fan and I thought that is why they are players and coaches; to just play the game....Give us something Browns! The only good spot in this Kellen Winslow, Cribbs both playing with heart and soul not thier big a....egos!

Pat, Sometimes sophistication can be lost on angry rabid football fans. _ Satire (sat'ir) n. the use of ridicule in exposing, denouncing, or deriding folly, absurdity, etc. P.S. You'd love it out here in the Sacramento area. Big following of Browns Backers, and it never snows.

Fellow Browns fans, I was there when the real adopt the Steelers materialized in the 70's. The Browns were the much superior team in those days leading up to the "Imaculate Reception". Clearly the Steelers were much like we are now.......downright bad. Being from Salem, Ohio I was almost the exact distance from Pitts and Clev. The majority of the people then were Browns fans, the Steelers were a joke for some 40 years before they climbed out of the mills and became the Steelers we all have become to despise. They took our glory, our wins and most of all the fans that I grew up with as Browns fans and were now all of a sudden a Steeler fan because they WON games and yeah a few Super Bowls as well. I ran into a young lady the other day and she was a Steeler fan and she could not tell me the name of the home field of the Steelers and she was from PA. So this is an example of my little quiz for the "Steeler" fan and in the 80's the SF fan. Can you name me one QB prior to Terry Bradshaw or Joe Montana? They don't know, they have no idea of the history of the team. That is all we have.....memories (Graham, Ryan, Nelson, Plum, Sipe, Kosar, oh yeah and a guy named Brown) of how it used to be (history passed down from generation to generation) and wishing, hoping and praying it would be again.

Patrick,i think that has already happened when the Browns left for Baltimore. Though i feel your frustration,it seems as though all of our problems we have in todays world like ,low pay ,no jobs ,no body in Washington who will listen to us , now our sports in Ohio suck too!! Man, there is no relief in site. The coaches of the Browns are too afraid to even critize the players of today for fear of "dissing " him in public.Bring back the days of good old Woody and Paul Brown.

I don't live in Cleveland anymore, but just listening to the Browns game Sunday brought back all the memories of bone-headed plays that have thwarted the team through the years. ESPN Radio couldn't understand why on the Browns "drive" to a field goal, there was no urgency to save the clock. Stupid, as usual. The only thing missing from this game was an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at a crucial moment. The Browns are good at those, too. Always have been. The Browns basically have as much to spend as every other NFL team, and this is the result. That's why, despite some bad mistakes, I can still root for the Tribe. Because of the big market-small market disparity, they actually have to use their brains from the front office to the field. They don't always do right but I'd say percentage wise, they've been far smarter.

I have been sincerely contemplating this ever since Gramps Modell pulled the rug out from under us. Kudos for your courage to say it. Plus the Steelers really are a class organization that is well run and competitive year in and year out. It's hard not to admire the blue-collar style of football they play. Compared to the shell of a team here... ugh. I believe I will die earlier if I continue to follow these Browns.

Posted 06:09 PM, 09/16/2008

Pat, I'm gonna have to disagree with you regarding the play of the offensive line. They maintained decent pass protection in this game. The run game suffered, I think, not because of poor play by the offensive line but because 1) the weather dictated when the Browns would have to go with the run and the Steelers defense knew it, and 2) the only option at RB who really saw any time was Lewis and all the Steelers needed to do was stuff the middle. If the Browns had mixed Harrison in a bit to work outside the tackles, the Browns might have been able to move the ball a bit better. At least Chud finally learned not to call long passes while the wind was howling.

Patrick, You should be fired for the article you wrote today. I should never open up my paper and see a local writer telling us we should turn our backs on the Cleveland Browns and root for the team to the east. After reading that article today I refuse to read the Akron Beacon Journal till you issue an apology to all of us die hard Browns fans. Not only has the sports section been horrible sine Mr. Pluto left but with that kinda journalism going on there is no other choice but to follow his lead to the Plain Dealer. I seriously hope you think about what you are saying next time you write something so ridiculous as that.

i don't even think this article is a syllable funny...crennel needs to be canned and savage needs to leave with him since he has no ability to pull the trigger himself, and has misjudged this coach, this team, and personnel, far too long crennel is a lying cheat and a terrible coach on top if that.

You must be the most miserable person to be around. Every single article you write is as gloomy and pessimistic as possible, and now you flat tell everyone to just give up. Sarcasm? Tongue-in-cheek? Maybe. But given your track record of dragging everyone down and focusing exclusively on the negative, I highly suspect you'd be better off sitting alone and writing this dreck for yourself than getting paid to rain on your readers with such irritating consistency. Here's a tip, Pat. Quit. Go away. Take a job in some other town where fans are bandwagoners and leave some print space for someone who doesn't smile every time he spits in someone's face. Even when you are right, you seem to delight in forcing agony on your readers. It's sick. Get some medication. Go on vacation. Don't come back.

Maybe you should go write for a paper in Pittsburgh and move there as well. Just what we need in Cleveland, another ignorant Browns fan (and so-called writer) bashing the home team and running to Pittsburgh. Just read all the comments from the Pittsburgh fans, they can't speel and their grammar is awful - you'd fit in great. You have to have an I.Q. below 80to live in Pittsburg and be a Steelers fan. To all you Squeeler fans... you're a disgrace - move!! PS - You'll all be jumping back on the bandwagon when the Browns turn things around just like you did with the Cavs and Indians. You're a joke.

As a Steelers fan who was treated abysmally by the loutish fans at last year's opener, I can only revel in the fact that you have lost twice in a row at home. Don't feel too bad though. You did at least lose to superior teams. Lose to the Ravens this week and you'll truly hit bottom. There's still plenty of room on the Steelers bandwagon. Throw your support to a real football team.

No. All I did was wear a Steelers jersey and cheer for my team. I had tailgated in a city lot with Browns fans and also had some good talks about the upcoming season with fans in one of your local bars. Once we walked into your stadium lot, we were pelted with beer, obscenities, and they took my son's hat and threw it in a mud puddle. In the stands, one guy poked me and told me he'd punch me in the mouth if I cheered one more time (his wife told him to sit down - she had more sense than he did). That kind of behavior is what the NFL put out rules this year for that unruly fans harassing visitors should be ejected. Sorry, the game is on the field, not in the stands, and I paid for my ticket and should have been able to enjoy the game as much as any other fan (well, hard for Browns fans that day, but that wasn't my fault).

I don't know who you are or where you came from. But I think it's disgusting that you would write an article like that for a newspaper. You ever see Anchorman where Will Ferrell makes the mistake of saying "go f*** yourself san diego!" on the 5 o'clock news? Well...in case you didn't...the whole city wanted to riot against him. That is how we feel about you now.

This is the biggest piece of garbage you have ever written. Why don't you adopt Pittsburgh, and go right for them. Never knew you liked Black and Yellow chin nuts? Are you ridiculous??? Do you know the meaning die-hard? For this very reason alone,Cleveland Browns have the #1 fan base! Call it Ignorance if you want, the too may be interchangeable for areas of your own life, which I'm sure they are. For instance, why are you writing for the Beacon, an OHIO paper, and encouraging embracing the enemy? It's like George Bush having a poster of Saddam Hussein! You should be ashamed of yourself for publishing such trash. Keep this to yourself next time. I'm sure you also believe the Browns will never get to the Superbowl anytime soon, SO when they DO, eventually, I hope you are no longer here to enjoy, or hop on the bandwagon. GO BROWNS, to heck with you and the Steelers!

Steve

Posted 10:43 AM, 09/18/2008

Whether sarcasm, tongue in cheek, or just a lame attempt to get readers, this article is disgusting. I didn't even get through the first few lines then skipped to read the comments. Of course all the Steelers fans would say things like "there's plenty of room on the bandwagon." Being a fan of a team means being a fan through the good and bad. Not jumping ship to a bitter hated rival when things are tough. That is why so many in the NE Ohio are Steeler fans. Back when they were young they (or before they were born their parents) became Steeler fans when the Steelers were doing well and winning Super Bowls. People who jump from team to team (sometimes regardless of being near that team) just to support a winner are FAIR WEATHER FANS! They can deny it all they want, but when that team starts to suck, they are gone looking for another winner. Not me, and not most true Browns fans. If I stop supporting the Browns I'll just be an NFL fan. Or maybe pick some other team I like (Packers, Bears, etc.) But not just because they are good, or winning. AND I WOULD NEVER BE A STEELER FAN. What's next, an article saying that Buckeye fans should be Michigan fans? OR USC fans. Pat, this article is pure garbage.

Posted 11:01 AM, 09/18/2008

I just read the info below in Pat's blog. So I guess he figured since he is out of a job at the ABJ he could make these stupid comments telling Browns fans to change their allegiance to the Steelers. Bye-bye pat, maybe you can get a job with the Pittsburgh paper. Finally … a personal note … the Beacon-Journal has again decided to lay off employees. This time, five reporters are on the list, me being one of them. The outrage is that this calls into question the long-term future of this brog. Layoffs take effect in 60 days. While I certainly hope things change in that time, I can only promise this clog will be around until Nov. 15. Questions may be directed toward your local Sta-Puf Marshmallow Man.

Stupid article about being a stupid Stooler fan. At least Browns fans can see when their team isn't very good. Stooler fans think they are going to the super bowl every year no matter how bad they are. Bottom line is that the Squeelers sucked just a little less than the Browns did. To think that the Browns didn't play hard is ludicrous. That game could have gone either way. I wouldn't make any post season party plans if I was a fan of either team.

Well Ryan, as a life long "squeelers" fan, I must say, that your post was pretty neat, along with your "speeling"! I'm quite surprised that an intellect, such as yourself, didnt pick up on that. Pat, I must be one of the few Steeler fans that dont want any Browns fans, migrating our direction. Regardless of your record, have some pride! If, and when the Browns pull themselves out of the perpetual funk, that theyve allowed themselves to fall into, I certainly hope that you wouldnt suggest that these same fans come back to Cleveland? I have also been a loyal fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates...even tho its usually hard to do so, I would never allow myself to become a fan of another team, just because my teams' performance has been soooo dismal, over the last 1 1/2 decades. Some day, the Browns will enjoy success again, and whos to say that the Steelers, will always be the team to beat in the AFC-north? My allegiance will always stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and I would hope, that Browns fans, would embrace their organization, in the same fashion.
