NFL WEEK 4 PREVIEW

By By Jim Armstrong|
Denver Post|

Huge news in Ohio — one of the state's NFL franchises is going to win a game today.

How do we know? Because the Bengals and Browns square off at Cincinnati. Unless they play to an overtime tie, one of them has to dent the left side of the ledger.

It isn't going to be easy. It never is in Cleveland and Cincinnati these days. The Bengals are 30th in the league in offense; the Browns, 32nd. Cincy has scored 40 points in three games; Cleveland, 26. Twenty-six points in three games? The Denver Broncos scored 24 in one quarter against the San Diego Chargers.

Not that Ohio is the lone no-man's land in the NFL, circa 2008. Missouri isn't exactly the Land of Ahs, either. The Show Me State could be home to the league's two worst teams. And just their luck, the St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs are playing undefeated teams today.

At least the Lions won't lose. They have a bye week, as do the Patriots, Colts, Giants, Seahawks and Dolphins. Not that the Lions didn't make any news last week. GM Matt Millen finally found a way to get fired: Give up 113 points and convert nine out of 34 first downs in your first three games.

Next NFL name to hit the unemployment line? Lane Kiffin. He'll be gone Monday, assuming Al Davis can get to the phone by then.

Atlanta at Carolina

1 p.m., Panthers by 7.

Last meeting: Falcons won 20-13 at Carolina on Nov. 11, 2007.

Jake Delhomme is healthy for this one, unlike last year, when the Panthers played musical quarterbacks. . . . Roadie has won the past five meetings in the series. . . . Falcons defensive end John Abraham leads NFL with six sacks. Panthers' leader has one.

Prediction: Panthers 31, Falcons 15.

Cleveland at Cincinnati

1 p.m., Bengals by 31/2.

Last meeting: Bengals won 19-14 at Cincinnati on Dec. 23, 2007.

Both clubs are winless, hopeless and clueless. . . . Derek Anderson will start for Brownies. We're with you, bubba. We think he ought to be selling insurance, too. . . . Bengals have won four straight in series at Cincy. . . . Teams have combined for 82 first downs. Broncos have 78.

Prediction: Bengals 37, Browns 33.

Denver at Kansas City

1 p.m., Broncos by 91/2.

Last meeting: Broncos won 41-7 at Denver on Dec. 9, 2007.

Paper or plastic for those face ornaments, Chiefs fans? . . . Tyler Thigpen, we hardly knew ya. Damon Huard expected to take the loss in this one. . . . Selvin Young leading Broncos at 6.9 yards per carry. Larry Johnson, meanwhile, closer to 6.9 feet per. . . . Jay Cutler, MVP candidate? Get used to it. Dude has got it going: 914 passing yards, 8 TDs.

Prediction: Broncos 37, Chiefs 19.

Houston at Jacksonville

1 p.m., Jaguars by 7.

Last meeting: Texans won 42-28 at Houston on Dec. 30, 2007.

Texans 0-2 and trying to recover from a hurricane. Other than that, it's all good in Houston. . . . Gary Kubiak has won three out of four vs. Jags. . . . David Garrard: 3 interceptions last season, 4 this year. . . . Jags miss Marcus Stroud on D-line, where leading pass rusher has one more sack than you do.

1 p.m., Jets by 1.

Last meeting: Jets won 13-3 at Arizona on Nov. 28, 2004.

Cards stayed on East Coast after loss to the Redskins. Coaches hoping A-Rod wasn't their tour guide in Big Apple. . . . Arizona plus-3 in turnovers, Jets minus-4. . . . Memo to Brett the Jet: One more L and the media honeymoon is history. . . . New York wide receiver Chansi Stuckey trying to become first Jet in 10 years to catch a touchdown pass in first four games.

Prediction: Cardinals 24, Jets 23.

Buffalo at St. Louis

4:05 p.m., Bills by 8.

Last meeting: Bills won 37-17 at Buffalo on Nov. 21, 2004.

Shocking, simply shocking. Rams, who lost first eight in '07, are 0-fer '08. . . . Trent Green will take over for Marc Bulger in this one. And you thought he was in some wax museum. . . . Trent Edwards in fourth quarter: 24-for-32, 2 TDs, no picks. . . . Dick Jauron 0-3 career vs. Rams. . . . Memo to St. Looie players: Get a first down already! Rams 8-for-36 on third down.

Prediction: Bucs 20, Packers 17.

Last meeting: Vikings won 20-3 at Minnesota on Oct. 24, 2004.

Jeff Fisher, NFL's longest-tenured mentor, 0-fer-4 against Vikes. . . . Titans in search of first 4-0 start in franchise history. . . . Titans 16-4 in past 20 when scoring 20-plus points. Vikings' leading receiver is running back Chester Taylor with seven.

Prediction: Titans 27, Vikings 16.

San Diego at Oakland

4:05 p.m., Chargers by 71/2.

Last meeting: Chargers won 30-17 at Oakland on Dec. 30, 2007.

Lane Kiffin headed for witness protection program if he loses this one. . . . Philip Rivers, gunslinger. Get used to it, Football Nation. Dude leads NFL with nine TD passes, 124.8 rating. . . . Chargers have won nine straight in series. . . . Raiders have won 20 of past 83.

Prediction: Chargers 34, Raiders 24.

Washington at Dallas

4:15 p.m., Cowboys by 11.

Last meeting: Redskins won 27-6 at Washington on Dec. 30, 2007.

Cowboys in driver's seat for Super Bowl. Not only that, their coach doesn't have permanent bad-hair syndrome, aka Jimmy Johnson. . . . Go figure. Cowboys minus-3 in turnovers. . . . Redskins are plus-5. . . . Tony Romo's last home game against Redskins: 22-for-32, 4 touchdowns. . . . Chris Cooley has five touchdown catches in past five against Cowboys.
