Do IT this week: Layering
Quinn does his best, and he does quite well
By Patrick McManamon

CLEVELAND: This city by the lake has the art museum and the orchestra and a football team that week in and week out finds ways to blow a game.
The way the Browns lose has almost become a higher art form than the other cultural icons in the area.
The latest was a Thursday choke job against the Denver Broncos, a 34-30 defeat that saw a 23-10, third-quarter lead frittered away to a stink bomb of a loss.
Consider these facts: Six minutes into the game, Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler had thrown for 120 yards, a 20-yard-per-minute pace. In the fourth quarter, Cutler did better, throwing for 204 yards and three touchdowns.
Those numbers are mind-boggling.
And on a night when quarterback Brady Quinn had a grand opening as the Browns' starter, the team left the field an embarrassed loser with twice as many defeats as wins for the season.
Can anyone say 2009?
''Disappointing,'' was the word Browns coach Romeo Crennel used.
Disgusting might be a better one.
Tight end Kellen Winslow contributed three crucial mistakes in second-half drives, and the Browns forgot to rush, cover and tackle as the Broncos drove for those three fourth-quarter scores.
A game that seemed to be in the books as a win turned into yet one more disappointing and deflating defeat.
Quinn had a very good night in his debut, but the defense did nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Unless you count giving up 564 total yards and allowing Cutler to throw for 447 yards a good night.
Or giving up 93-, 62- and 80-yard drives in the fourth quarter a respectable performance.
Or letting a team with no running back destroy the defense with the passing game.
And as well as Quinn played, when the Browns needed a score-tying drive late, he could not produce.
It didn't help of course that a fourth-down pass to keep the game alive went through Winslow's hands. It was a catch Winslow called ''routine,'' except it wasn't.
Winslow caught 10 passes and had two touchdowns, but almost single-handedly stopped three fourth-quarter drives.
To expect Quinn to provide a two-minute drive to tie might have been asking much, even against a woeful Broncos defense.
But the Browns' defense proved to be more woeful than woeful — and the Browns didn't have the excuse of missing a Pro Bowl corner the way the Broncos were missing Champ Bailey.
Winning teams find ways to overcome the loss of a starting cornerback or the loss of two running backs to go with the previous loss of two other running backs. That's what the Broncos did.
The Browns played like stumblebums. Again.
Think about it.
In the second half, the Broncos were using a fullback at tailback, because they had lost four running backs, two in this game.
Yet one of the guys the Broncos lost, rookie Ryan Torain, still led the game with 68 yards rushing, even though he didn't play much past the second quarter.
All the Broncos did was drop Cutler back, let him read a passage from War and Peace, then throw to an open receiver.
Brandon McDonald was the target of two of the fourth-quarter touchdowns, and on the other, tight end Daniel Graham ran through the tackles of D'Qwell Jackson and Mike Adams.
Can you spell stinkeroonie?
Quinn did his best, and he did quite well. He finished 23-for-35 for 239 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
In the first half, Quinn threw two touchdown passes, one as he leaped with the rush on top of him.
He did the same on some key throws in the second half, at times avoiding the rush, at times rolling out, at times doing just enough to get rid of the ball.
And in the fourth quarter, after the Broncos had gone ahead 27-23, Quinn led the Browns on a 78-yard touchdown drive to give the Browns a three-point lead.
Either Crennel is a genius for waiting this long to start Quinn against a woeful Broncos defense, or he should be pilloried for waiting this long to start Quinn against a woeful Broncos defense.
That's really mere fodder for the talk shows. Because none of that mattered to the Broncos, who concentrated on winning the game.
McDonald has become a target worthy of the store.
The Baltimore Ravens and the Broncos combined to score 71 points in two games on the Browns' defense.
And one of their offensive ''stars'' again let the team down when it mattered most.
The moral of the story?
Changing the quarterback might change one position, but it won't win the game when the rest of the team isn't doing its part.

Wow what a difference quick feet can have on a quarterback ! Now honestly who in here thought that he would put up 30 points and no interceptions ? Too bad the nofense defense folded up like a cheap tent. Having no linebackers and small and slow d-backs can make for a long night .
hi
Great night for Brady. He actually was in control out there. I saw more from him in one game than DA in 1.5 years. Loss on bad coaching, examples: What happened to Harrison? Why no blitz on a team with no running game? No bombs thrown by offense to stretch bad Broncos defense. Time for Romeo to go!! Now!!
So many talented players and no coaching. The previous poster is correct...no blitz? Harrison and Cribbs tore it up when they were put in. Ugh.
If Quinn was a REAL football player, he'd go out and play cornerback.
Even if they had Otto Graham at QB last night, they still would have lost the game.
I wonder who the Chiefs were offering for Quinn a few weeks ago?
Is there any hope of trading head coaches?
Seems the 3-4 defense does ok for 3qtrs. or so then the defense looks like its gassed and collapses.Maybe some defensive changes are in order late in the game;what I do not know.It is apparent, though, the CB's do not have the horses to win in the NFL.Is it poor draft choices?Bad trades?Coaching?Maybe its all three.
FIRE CRENNEL NOW !!NO TEAM IN BROWNS HISTORY HAS BLOWN A 13 POINT LEAD IN SECOND HALF TO LOSE 2 GAMES IN A ROW ONLY A ROMEO CRENNEL COACHED TEAM. FIRE CRENNEL NOW!!!!!
It was never Derek Anderson's fault we were not winning.
Want a serious change? Fire the Head Coach.
Far more impressive to score 27 against Baltimore than 30 against Denver.
What everyone is refusing to mention is the offense got worse. 30 against the completed depleted Denver defense is the equivalent of 7 against Baltimore.
But the switch has been made and after the season Derek Anderson will be traded. So lets stop blaming the QB, its not Quinn's fault and won't be as we continue to lose.
Time to fire Crennel and probably Savage right after is a strong possibility. His draft strategy has been bad.
Wow, I have never seen a more clueless group of fans. Chud is the offensive coordinator, he is the reason the Browns didn't run it on 3 and short or 4 and short to pick up the first down and keep the drive going. Quinn has some great potential, but until he stops dink and dunking down the field teams are going to start eating him up with zone coverage underneath. Also last time I checked Crennel is HEAD COACH and doesn't make the defensive play calling.
Before we designate Quinn the Browns Nationa savior lets remember, This is the same group of fans who thought Luke McCown and Charlie Frye were the answer at quarterback.
Anderson went 135 straight passes without a pick, and he led the Browns to a win over the Giants, a close game against the Redskins and a close game late against the Ravens. Maybe if Braylon started playing like a number one receiever and not a Peewee reciever DA would still be in there. He had been playing well since the Bye Week. His receivers just forgot how to catch the ball. It's easy to go 23-35 when your longest pass down field is only 11 yards and the coverage is playing off. I think even Tim Couch could come back and put up those numbers.
Try blaiming the defense for giving up 20 some odd 4th quarter points the last two weeks. that's where 3-6 come from instead of 5-4
The real story here is the Browns defense. It is absolutely a disgrace. You could hear Steelers fans laughing all the way from Pittsburgh. I think "Big Dawg" should retire his "dawg" mask for a while. And poor old Brandon McDonald. Where is the help for this guy? He was over matched last night and should not have been in so many one-on-one situations. He is not totally to blame. Brady Quinn: Great job! He was coservative, did not make any mistakes, showed his nerves a little bit but overall he did a great job. I can't wait to see his next start with a full week and a half of preparation. It is going to take a few games for the team to adjust to Brady but wow...what a breath of fresh air. And how great was it to see a quarterback move outside the pocket. For some reason I thought all Browns quarterbacks had concrete in their shoes. Nice mobility. Finally, I saw Brady actually SCOPE OUT THE WHOLE FIELD. I remember one play where he looked right and then immediately came back and threw left. Nice to see. Overall, keep playing Brady...let's see more. Romeo, you have 7 games to prove that you still belong. You might start by trying not to look so dejected on the sideline late in the game. Go Browns in 2009.
Patrick why can't you just come out and say that Quinn played a fantastic game for his first start on only a couple of days practice with the first team. You say he didn't produce on the last drive. He had the good judgment to find his all-pro tight end with a perfect pass and he dropped it. Enough said. Regarding the difference between DA and BQ it is obvious. Quinn has command. You could tell it from the moment he stepped on the field. He is a true leader. Unlike his pathetic coach who once again takes no responsbillity for his teams mistakes. He said the loss is "disappointing" as if someone else had a role in it. This is his undisciplined team that misses tackles, forgets formations, makes stupid mistakes, barks on the sidelines when things don't go their way, and whine and complain all week about whose fault it is. Crennel should be fired TODAY. Savage should be fired TODAY. Hire bill cower to do both jobs.
For all of the people that want to fire Crennel "Now", who do you think is waiting in the wings to take his place? Cowher is not, I repeat NOT going to come into a situation like this in the middle of the season. I seriously doubt he would take the job at the end of the season. A new coach is not going to light a fire under this team without at least a winter to build a program and roster. Face it Browns fans, this IS Browns football for the rest of 2008.
a sad, pathetic team, and i use the word team
very loosely ! poorly coached, no heart, no
direction, the name, colors, and records should
have moved when the team did, what garbage is out
there now bears no resemblance to the legacy of
cleveland browns football.
These last two losses are on the head coach! Quinn is the future and it was a smart move to go with him (probably wasn't Crennel's decision). You can try to pin these losses on the Coordinators, but as a head coach you have to know when to step in and make a call...you ran for 160 yards, 5.5 per carry. If Chud called three straight passes ridiculous! As a head coach you step in and say run for the first down! Same for the defense, Crennel a former D-Coord...how does his defense get picked apart? I have a feeling when Crennel was in New England he was getting a lot of help from the head coach! Next move is to fire Crennel...the Browns need a coach that can motivate these young guys and knows how to make good decisions.
How can a former defensive coordinator for one of the best teams in the league today, be the head coach for a football team that has one of the worst defenses I have ever seen? You'd think he'd be able to slip some tips to the defensive coaching staff...
Erik - you are a complete moron.
The headcoach has the ultimate responsibility. That's Romeo's problem he doesn't DO ANYTHING, except offer up terrible insight in interviews. How do we have a defensive coordinator for a head coach and an unacceptable defense. Romeo should be able to see that the D corrdinator is no good an fire him. As far as DA goes, get a clue. DA is not an NFL starter. He really doesn't have many skills.. He has arm strength and that's about it. He's not accurate, not very smart and not mobile. Brady Quinn will be a star one day. He's still learning and has had no NFL experience. Everyone new he would be the starter. The Browns did not dump him after last year because no one wanted him. The NFL minds could see through his facade of a season. You're talking about a guy who played at a nothing college and was picked late. He's a backup at best. Brady was a top quarterback at a major program and a first round pick.
I agree, a lot of the Brown's problems are not DA's fault this year.. However, he's singlehandedly lost two games for us. At least Brady give's you a shot because he's an intelligent quarterback.
As for your throwing downfield comment, get a clue. The kid played started his first game after one practice with the starters and little reps with the starters prior to that. Your comment on him throwing downfield is one of the dumbest I've heard. He was checking off because he was taking what was given, a smart move for a guy that doesn't have the timing yet with his receivers.
Quinn did a great job. I hope they keep him in the game more offen. DA was good in his prime but that's over. Oh yah, GET RID OF THE COACH. They are the ones that killed the team last night, and the week before.
This argument of BQ over DA is going to be going on for some time, especially once we start playing against quality defenses on the road, and that starts on Monday night against the Bills. Quinn played a good game last night against a bad defense. He wasn't great, made some mistakes, which is expected, but his overall performance was good. The problems on this team goes much deeper than the qb position. The problem begins and ends with the head coach which is something this team lacks. He's the one that suppose to instill confidence in his players, to push them and demand that they perform at 100% 100% of the time, no excuses. He is suppose to be the ultimate leader of his team and the Browns just don't have that. Sadly, too much has been placed upon the shoulders of BQ, he cannot single handedly save this team just like DA did not single handedly lose any games. At some point the powers to be are going to have to step up and take control of the situation, if not this franchise will fade away until someone steps in and fixes it.
There is a huge difference between Brady's performance and DA's prior failures. Of all quarterbacks in the nfl with at least 200 pass attempts DA was ranked 32nd in passer rating. Even Jamarcus Russell from Oakland has a better passer rating. You can't blame every loss on DA but it is clear he wasn't playing good and his personal stats stunk. I'll admit I am a Brady fan, and I couldn't wait till now, when he gets his chance. I don't understand why RC waited untill the season is over to give him his chance. I understand loyalty, because DA basically saved RC's job last year but now I think he has sealed his fate this year by waiting so long. I doubt if Cower will come to Cleveland, what about Billick?
I was sorry to see the Browns lose again; although watching Brady Quinn last night was awesome. He came in there pumped up!! It was Browns football like we haven't seen in awhile!
Brady did a fantastic job! Got the offense down---now work of the defence :)
Move the team to
Excuse me. screwed up like the Browns. Move the Browns to KENMORE in the nite...
excuse me I hit the wrong key. Like the BROWNS. mOVE THEM TO KENMORE in the nite.....
Nice of Kellen Winslow to stick around and field questions from the media after the game. Unlike Braylon Edwards who took off after the loss to the Ravens, Winslow explained his dropped pass and fumble. I give him credit for that. After listening to Cribbs in postgame interviews, I love this guy even more. He feels like he is to blame for the loss yesterday. He was upset because he didn't score on kickoffs. Phil Savage, if you have not already, please renegotiate Cribbs' contract like he requested. He deserves it and we are lucky to have him wearing a Browns uniform.
i wish they woulld realize the 3-4 defense is not working with our present linebackers. the qb had time to smoke a cigarette before passing on most of them.
crennel is supposed to be this defensive guru.
wrong - he is offensive
AND COULD SOMEONE TELL ME WHY THE INSISTANCE ON RUNNING RIGHT ON SHORT DOWNS. EVERY DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR HAS IT FIGURED OUT.
What a joke. DA gets all the blame after he puts a ball right in the WR's hands for what should have been the winning touchdown. Whole team around him plays poor- all year long- he gets 100% of the blame.
Quinn comes in, same results, in the same way, now it's everybody elses fault. How long are the excuses going to continue for him if the results stay the same. Better yet, why should they. Does everyone like the way the Browns lose as long as Quinns the QB. DA, get the heck out of that crazy place.
THE HEADLINES AT EVERY NEWSPAPER IN NORTHEAST OHIO SOULD BE SCREAMING THAT ROMEO CRENNELL BE FIRED AT ONCE.IN HIS OWN WORDS WHEN THE AQUIRED ROGERS,WILLIAMS AND STALLWORTH WAS THAT NOW HE HAS TO WIN.HE'S A MAJOR FAILURE AN SHOULD BE F I R E D IMEDIATLY NOW. DOES NOT DESERVE TO FINISH THE SEASON!!
