Quinn is solid, but Browns melt against Broncos
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer
Published on Friday, Nov 07, 2008
CLEVELAND: Until the fourth quarter, the short week didn't matter. Quarterback Brady Quinn's lack of reps with the Browns' first team didn't matter.
The 22nd overall pick in the 2007 draft from Notre Dame, Quinn seemed calm and in control in his NFL debut. But he couldn't make up for his teammates' meltdown in the final 15 minutes as the Browns fell 34-30 to the Denver Broncos on Thursday night.
The Browns (3-6) held a 23-10 lead with 10:21 left in the third quarter. It followed the same script from Sunday, when the team fell 37-27 to the visiting Baltimore Ravens, blowing a 14-point, third-quarter lead.
''A 93-yard touchdown pass should never happen, ever,'' Browns coach Romeo Crennel said. ''Missed tackles, letting them throw balls over our head, tight ends in the middle of coverage. We didn't make any plays. It's unfortunate, it really is.''
Browns running back Jamal Lewis said the Browns' failures in the past five days left him ''as frustrated as I've been in as many years as I've been playing. . . . I've never seen anything like it in my life. I'm just not cut from this kind of cloth. I play physical football; I come out here and give it my all — all week.
''This is the NFL, you can't call it quits until the game is over. But it looks to me like some people call it quits before that. Denver was down, but they didn't call it quits. They kept their heads up and they finished. We didn't do that two weeks in a row — at home.''
Though he didn't name names, Lewis sounded like he wanted to.
''Some people need to check their egos at the door and find some heart to come out here and play hard,'' Lewis said. ''This is a man's game. The way we went out there and played two weeks in a row, finishing the same kind of way, it's just not there.''
The Broncos (5-4) had no running backs in the second half, losing Ryan Torain and Selvin Young to injuries, and were forced to go with rookie fullback Peyton Hillis.
But third-year quarterback Jay Cutler threw for 447 yards and three touchdowns, all in the fourth quarter, including the 11-yard game-winner to Brandon Marshall with 1:14 to go. Cutler hit on 24-of-42 passes with just one interception as the Broncos rolled up 566 total yards. The Browns have given up 993 yards in the past two games.
Quinn's last-gasp drive ended at the Browns' 42 when tight end Kellen Winslow let a pass go through his hands on fourth-and-1.
''I love clutch situations; I live for them,'' Winslow said. ''It's like Michael Jordan or Kobe [Bryant] at the end of a game, and I missed the shot. We didn't make enough plays. I didn't make enough plays.''
Quinn was bidding to become the first Browns quarterback to win his debut since Bernie Kosar in 1985. Crennel benched Derek Anderson on Monday afternoon and turned the team over to Quinn, even though he had just two days of practice with the starters.
''We lost; that's all I can think of right now,'' Quinn said. ''It falls on me to make a play and find someone to get us a first down [on the final series]. We had great field position. I just wanted to put us in position to take shots in the end zone.
''There was no doubt in my mind when I walked out there that we were going to score on every drive. If you don't think like that, you're not going to be successful.''
Facing a Broncos defense that ranked 29th in the league, Quinn completed 23-of-35 for 239 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. His passer rating was 104.3.
''He managed the game nicely,'' Crennel said. ''He used his backs, used his tight ends. He was able to get out of trouble with his feet. It's unfortunate we couldn't hold on and win the game for him.''
Teammates praised Quinn for his poise, as did Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.
''I thought Brady did a great job,'' Shanahan said. ''He was poised and made a bunch of big plays. For his first game, I thought he did probably as well as he could do.''
The Browns' offense seemed to take on a new identity with Quinn', as coordinator Rob Chudzinski relied on a short passing game. The beneficiary was Winslow, who caught a career-high two touchdown catches and pulled in 10 passes for 111 yards.
But Winslow's crucial mistakes in the fourth quarter enabled the Broncos to take the lead.
Early in the quarter, Winslow was called for offensive pass interference, nullifying a 14-yard completion to Braylon Edwards on third down that would have given the Browns a first down at the Broncos' 27.
On the Broncos' next play from scrimmage, Cutler hit rookie receiver Eddie Royal on a 93-yard touchdown pass, the fourth-longest receiving touchdown in Broncos' history. That cut the Browns' lead to 23-20 with 13:30 remaining.
Then on the Browns' next possession, Winslow caught an 8-yard pass for a first down on third-and-6, but cornerback Dre' Bly forced the ball out and cornerback Karl Paymah recovered at the Broncos' 38.
''I was fighting for extra yards, and they were holding me up,'' Winslow said. ''Dre' Bly did a good job of stripping it, and they recovered it and they scored a touchdown. Again, my fault.''

This defense is awful. I don't think the Browns have had a good one in quite a while. You can't have a good defense when you have guys that physically can't tackle. There aren't many guys on that defense that I would consider worthy of playing in this league.
Forget about this year. They need to rebuild this team AGAIN from the inside out. Get rid of most of the big name overpaid players now and get some decent young linemen and LB's. Without talent at these positions they will never win. Do it now and start to prepare for next season or it will be the same as this one.
Hire a GM who will will be deticated getting the players at the necassary positions. Then get a coach who can teach enough dicipline to keep them from folding in the fourth quarter.
Lost and Found section-Looking for the browns DEFENSE-if found please return back to Owner-Reward includes a better look for next game-whered the pass rush go guys?
BQ did his job yesterday. The Defense didn't do theirs and K2 failed the team in the 2nd half with his fumble, penalty, and missing the critical 4th down pass that went through his hands. Fire Crennel !!!
Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes, mistakes are an indication that RC has lost control. Someone upstairs has to take the bull by the horn & rebuild this organizaton now. The players have obviously quit on the coach, and the coach is not capable in so many ways; i.e. why was there no running back on the last play when Winslow dropped that pass. Please do something positive!
Oh, I love being a Browns fan. Where's my noose?
One bright spot was Brady -- thank goodness there is one positive aspect to this unbelievably disappointing year. Can't fathom the defense playing so poorly -- yes we need a new coach who will demand 100% effort from each player or give them the door. Who cares what their potential was
(Kameron Wimbly for example)-- send them home if they don't perform. Cutler was good -- but he should have been intercepted at least two times more than he was -- and the list of errors and lack of discipline, heart, etc, goes on and on. These guys are playing for the paycheck only. Get them out of there == but get RC out first!
Winslow is what Reggie Jackson was to baseball BEFORE the DH. Reggie would knock in 5 with his bat and let in 6 with his glove! Winslow catches two TD passes and gives up 2 with his mistakes. Glad they fired Todd Grantham as defensive coordinator. Mel Tucker is really doing a great job as is Romeo's 3-4 defense. There defense last year had NO defensive line and they still managed to win games they were winning going into the 4th quarter. We could probably trade with KC, Detroit, and Oakland right now. They are as sorry if not sorrier than us. Fire Crennel---hire Cowher NOW! It's not about the money! Hell they gave Romeo an extension because they actually thought he could do something. The truth of the matter is the Browns played a weak schedule and got lucky last year. When they needed to beat the lowly Bengals to make the playoffs, the same thing happened that always has happened since they came back....they lost!
Who's taking bets on RC firing?
On the long pass McDonald tried to signal for help but no help came...but he made a mental mistake also, when he saw what was comming he should have backed up 15 yards and stayed behind the receiver and gave him a mcginnis as the ball hit his hands...then no reception no TD for Denver...
Look at the bright side. We don' have to watch the clowns on Sunday!
The only good thing that came out of this loss is the fact Romeo's days are numbered...Oh yea, he can take DA with him on his way out the door!
gee---maybe if quinn played defense also.......
someone tell me WHY DO THEY INSIST ON A 3-4 DEFENSE WHEN THEY DO NOT HAVE THE LINEBACKERS FOR IT?
4 years is more than enough time to put something else out there besides this garbage.
denver is 5-4 and playing without half its starters. injurys are no excuse.
i wouldn't give you a BUFFALO nickle (next defeat)for the entire defense.
overrated ----overrated -----overrated
No interceptions in your debut ,fantastic !Can someone tell me how a guy like Harrison can run all over the field for you on one series and then you sit him on the bench for the rest of the time ? I think we have the shortest and slowest defensive backs in football, these guys are 6 inches shorter than the receivers and got burnt like toast all night. The Browns would need a miracle to fill all the holes in this defense and Savage is not a good enough GM to do it .
When DA and RC are gone, who's next on your list of "They gotta' go, Browns suck."
I'd love to see all your posts from last year. I highly doubt they were critical of DA or RC.
Fair weather fans in a bad weather city. Go figure.
It's obvious Winslow has some kind of chip on his shoulder. Every time he caught a pass he would flex his bicep and point to it. Would that he put as much concentration and enthusiasm into playing the game FOUR QUARTERS as he does show-boating.
I guess Steven thinks all is well and we should be proud of our team at this point. Because we are true fans it gives us the right to be critical. Must be a Steelers fan.
New book coming out today...'How to Lose', by R. Crennel with contributions by Mel Tucker and "Chud". Harrison had 5 carries for a 9.6 avg per, Cribbs had 3 carries for a 16.0 avg per. Then, where did that aspect go? I can't believe the positive comments on Chud...4th and 1, last play of the game and a pass? Typical. Rogers had 2 tackles...he was double teamed all night. So, where are the adjustments from the defensive guru? They knew coming into the game that Denver had no run game...how? does Cutler throw for almost 500 yards knowing that? Perhaps the biggest problem is the non-existent linebacker(s) There is so much talent on this team and no one to coach it.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%#######################################!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To Steven:
Very well said good sir. Almost everyone that posts on here were talking so much last year about how great this team was gonna be, ha! Once again those words are being swallowed and they are looking at next year......again.
Sincerly
SteelCurtain74
A nice play action dive into the line on that last play, with Quinn rolling out with the option to run or pass would have been the best call. They didn't do that all night!
I remember last year listening to all the guys in the gym talk about how solid a team the Clowns put together. Then you had the gimmie schedule and won 10 games for the first time in years (maybe decades). 'DA this...', K2 that...', 'RC will be able to brings us together'. Now listen to you guys *hit on everyone. Pretty soon someone is gonna be calling for the head of BQ. Fair weather fans! Just like their team... no consistency.
A QB rating of 104. 2 TDs. No interceptions.
And he still can't win a big game!
You just watch! Quinn may lead a team to the Super Bowl within a few years, but he'll lose the Super Bowl. What a loser.
Trade him TODAY along with Winslow, to Detroit for Chad Johnson!
Oh sorry! Calvin Johnson. My bad. You can trade me too!
SeelCurtain, Do you think your Steelers will win the Super bowl again? Go tell someone who cares.
Hey ben, kind of hard to trade with Detroit for Chad Johnson considering he doesn't play for Detroit. You sir, are a complete idiot!!!
Quinn did great. Cribbs, Harrison and Lewis all did great. The rest of our team needs to shape the hell up.
RomeoMustGo.com
Now that he's put Quinn in, as most of the knowledgeable fans have been clamoring for since game 3 of this season, Crennel might think we'll give him a free pass for the rest of the season.
All that Quinn's performance last night proves is that RAC kept the team's best quarterback on the bench for the first half of the season. There is no excuse for this. If the guy earns a huge bonus, then he's EARNED his bonus.
RomeoMustGo.com
Quinn is not the right quarterback for the Browns. He never was. He is simply some city's hometime hero. I agree a quarterback can't win a game all by his self. But a quarterback needs be respected by his team mates, and Quinn is not for various reasons. The Brown need a season quarterback, but
settle for unknown losers - Anderson and Quinn.
Anyone surprised they lost>? I'm not. Browns Stink.
SeelCurant, the steelers are very lucky the rest of the division sucks so bad. We will see how they do down the stretch. Then you will shut up and go to your own hillbilly newspapers website and cry just like everbody here.
Is BQ being benched? DA was when the defense lost the Baltimore game.
It was Derek Anderson's fault we lost.
Always is.
His fault the receivers drop passes, fumble and run the wrong patters and stop their route at 8 yards on third and 9.
It is his fault the defense sucks. His fault the coaching staff makes bad decisions. Derek sucked last night and that is why we lost.
Derek made bad decisions on 4th and 1 at the end of the game. Derek threw the ball too hard that it went through KW2's hands.
Derek was throwing the ball so low that guys had pick it off the top of the grass blades all night.
Derek sucked so bad he caused KW2 to run through the DB and be called for a penalty.
Derek decided to stop using Jerome Harrison after he showed he was doing too good a job and in danger of making our offense look multi-dimensional.
That Anderson guy was fully to blame that we lost to Denver, a team with 6 starters on Defense injured including all of the DBs and then lost their MLB during the game.
Derek refused to go deep even once against a team with DBs that were practice squad stiffs.
Just blame it all on Derek Anderson like we have all year. Never mind he didn't play. It could not be the golden boy's fault. Chud and Romeo certainly are too smart to get all that wrong. Had to be Derek.
Releasse Derek and we can start winning again.
Lewis did great?
Denver has horrible defense near last in the league when healthy and was even worse because of injuries and Lewis averaged about 3 yards a carry and I read people saying he played great.
No wonder you think Brady played great too. His play was about the equivalent of putting up 20 points against Navy in college.
man! Same old junk...they managed to pull defeat from the jaws of victory!
The quarterbacks, receivers and running backs are not to blame. The offensive line cant block consistantly except for a couple of guys. The defense cant stop anybody when they need to. How can anyone blame anybody but them?
Was that Romeo or a trees stump! I'm glad we hired a mentally challenged coach. It's good for the NFL to have people like that as coaches. It shows that even if you stare into space for 20 of the 24 hours of the day you can still be and NFL head coach!
THE WORST LINEBACKERS AS A GROUP IN ALL OF FOOTBALL INCLUDING PEE WEES!!!!!!!!!AND TAKE THAT 3-4 D. TO MARS. UGH!!!!!!!
This is truly my last comments for the year: Still The coaching staff and most of the defensive players need to go. That was a pitiful display of defense. This defense needs to be rebuilt. There are no playmakers and they just look helpless. If Denver would have been healthy, they might have scored 60 pts and had about 700 total yards. Good Job Brady! I will wait for next year, I can't bear to watch the team implode again.
DA has been and wil alays be a practice squad player...There was a reason Baltimore left him on the practrice squad and then released him...Trust me these guys don't miss to often when looking at talent....and the fact remains DA is simply a practice squad/3rd team QB
Lewis played great game when you realize Denver put 9 men in the box most of the second half. Brady threw exactly 1 ball over 20 yards in the first half and missed that pass by 5 yards. I can't wait to see him next week when Buffalo actually has film to study. Quinn will complete 60% of his passes, the browns will kick 6 field goals and we'll get beat 21-18. You have to be able to take some shots down the field and Brady can't because his arm is too weak.
It has been almost 20 years since this team has actually been competitive. I think I've given them the benefit of the doubt. I'm through with them. If it wasn't for the Bengals, Lions and Cardinals they would have been the worst franchise in the past 20 years. I'm going back to my enjoyable fall Sunday afternoons that I had when the Browns left town. Too bad they came back. If you haven't been down to Columbus for a Buckeyes game, do it. You'll see what a far more enjoyable experience that is compared to a Browns game.
Hey R-get off my boy steelcurtain-you can't talk trash about the steelers-5 superbowls-numerous playoff appearances-13 times in the conference championship-winningest record in nfl in the last 15 seasons-pro bowlers EVERY year-lose great players to retirement or free agency and reload- the model franchise of pro sports- DON'T HATE!!!!!!
Good post Rick! I'm glad most of these people who post aren't coaches.
Sean....Even though a Browns fan your coorect, Steelers just keep winning year after year. Players, coached ect continue to churn year after year yet they win! Browns should take a lesson from them
It's sad seeing so many professional football players who can't tackle.
Hey "R" I made this list especially for you and all the cry-baby browns fans:
Every year its the same thing:
1. Fire the QB
2. Start the back-up QB hes the answer
3. The back-up still chokes now its the defenses fault
4. Fire Crennelephant
5. Fire Phil Savage
6. Bench Braylon because IF he would have made that catch the Browns would have won
7. The secondary is bad fire all of them
So you get a choice of 1-7(a small list) for each week the Browns lose. Last week it was choice 1 this week its choice 4. What will next week bring? All of the above?
Brady Quinn is going to be good and do great things for this team... I just hope we can get more leaders and impact players on defense. It's been a tough year, but the QB of the future is finally in, no more question mark from that position at least. And to the guy who says they are not taking shots down field cause his arm is too weak... Have u even watched the other games. The browns have went downfield like 5 times all season. Your perspective and attitude towards what you call your team is hilarious. Let me guess DA has played well, Winslow is an ubertalent, you've hated Quinn since college, and you voted for McCain.
Out coached. Romeo has to go.
Jerome Harrison looked All-Pro and disappeared never to be seen the rest of the game
Brady, mobility, quick release, short passes and able to pick up secondary receiver A
Another long pass play to break Cleveland's back
Another blown lead and poor play calling. Can't sit on the ball. Jerome should have been in one of those series of plays.
400 yards passing for Denver
Another post game breakdown from Jon S.
No secondary can play good with the amount of time Cutler was given. Look at what Elway did when we went into the prevent against him. Look at what Flacco did. Its not all on the secondary.
WindsLOW is a PUNK!!!!!!!! Show off that cant carry it off as a REAL player.. I did NOT see the FULLBACK Mr. HILLIS (rookie, playing RUNNING BACK act like an IDIOT when HE MR HILLIS, made that 4th down FOR his TEAM that SAVE the game for "HIS" Team!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!! TEAM DOES NOT HAVE AN "I" IN IT.........GO BRONCOS!!!!! I AM PROUD OF YOU!!!! I was borne in NE Ohio so I am stupid & stuck with being a Browns fan. GOD HELP US ALL!!!!!!
Brandon McDonald was horrible! Drafting a cornerback must be a top priority.
Brady Quinn did fine.
Maybee I cant talk trash about the steelers but I can talk trash about the steelers fans. they dont have a clue.
Hey Mutt, I guess you cant read either. I never said any of that. Go back to the hills and leave us alone. (stop drinking and get some new teeth)
Winslow GREAT BIG TALENT, itty bitty brain.
Crennel GREAT BIG BODY, itty bitty brain.
I would say Crennel would be in a must win situation if there was a Head Coach floating around will to take over the team.
Firing a guy for an interim head coach rarely works out well for the team. You might as well let him finish the season before firing him. How much more damage can he do?
Savage should not be far behind, his list of blown draft picks is far too long. All those picks and what impact player do we have on Defense? Offense?
Other than Joe Thomas what really good pick has Savage made and he has draft high and used up a ton of future picks to move up and gotten who?
