Browns GM Savage responds to fan with implied obscenity

By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sports writer

Browns coach Romeo Crennel more or less confirmed today that General Manager Phil Savage responded to a fan's hostile e-mail with an implied obscenity Monday night.

The Web site http://www.deadspin.com reported that a fan sent Savage several highly critical e-mails during the Bills game. Savage responded by telling the fan to root for Buffalo and ended with an implied obscenity, though he did not actually spell the word.

''We all get frustrated at times,'' Crennel said in his daily news conference.

He continued by saying people try to be ''professional'' and hold it in, but ''sometimes things slip out.''

''It's unfortunate that it slipped out,'' Crennel said.

WKNR's Tony Rizzo said on his radio show that he talked to the fan, and the fan thought he deserved it. The fan told Rizzo he apologized to Savage after hearing from the GM.

Savage did not appear during the news conference, but Crennel said he talked to Savage this morning and Savage emphasized winning the next game.

Maybe the fan is like everyone else who is tired of hearing, "Well, there is always next year."

Wanna take down another post? I'll put it right back up again. CENSOR THIS!

I said, maybe this fan is tired of hearing, "Well, there is always next year" every single year for the last 40 years.

This paper's getting as bad as the PD. You should follow through before reporting something as fact and not trust the most unreliable talk show host in Cleveland who just last week said that Rogers was inactive against the Bills at the same time ESPN was showing Rogers warming up on the field on their Countdown show. FYI to you, your readers and Rizzo the so called fan is actually no other than Tim Benz who is the guy from WXDX in Pittsburgh that reported the email. His email address was traced as the "original" sender to Savage and he was fired from 1460 WBNS a few years ago and now always rips anything Ohio including the Buckeyes and of course the Browns.

perhaps it's like those 'implied wins' the browns have had...or the 'implied catches' that braylon has let slip through his fingers.

Posted 12:59 PM, 11/20/2008

If a player in the NFL was seen or heard giving the finger to a fan or telling the fan to F.U. then the NFL would be fining the player a lot of his income. The same needs to happen to Savage. If not then the 'absent owner' of this sorry organization needs to set forth a hefty fine. GM's are suppose to be above responding in this way. I'm totally unhappy with how this organization acts.

We can now never know for certain, since they'd not have had the requisite assimilation time to learn the system and develop syncronicity with their defensive mates, but a foursome of currently on-the-street vet free agent LBs could render superior play and production than those Phil has provided as starters. Nine he's drafted but not a single one excels in any facet of positional play.

Savage needs stop reading and responding to fans emails, if he going to get this upset. Everyone knows the Browns are not doing well this year for various reasons. I hope the owner does not move the Browns out of the Cleveland area.

The end is near. Savage & Crennel will be gone at season's end. A new management/coaching team is on the way. The Browns are no better today then when they started in 1999 with their expansion draft. So sad for Browns fans who have waited since 1964 for a Super Bowl NBA Championship game win. As for me, GO STEELERS !!!

Rizzo is a turd... I don't care how bad they are, I will still watch every game... I'm not a coach, owner, or a player so I have no idea what changes they need to make, but obviously they need to change something!

This is not a new story. Fans use obscenities at games all the time, clearly directing them at players and coaches and towel-boys alike. Everybody's got their limit of how much BS they can take... I say bravo, Savage. Of all the things wrong with the Browns, you can thank Savage for at least providing the glimmer of hope that is Brady Quinn.

Phil Savage is an IDIOT !! Who in their right mind being in the position that he is in would dignify a comment from an irate fan so everyone could read or hear about it. The man has no class. The Browns are loosers for years always have been and always will be!!

Didn't Romeo Crennel get in trouble a few years back for his "see you next Tuesday" response? Seems as though he did. Why should the GM not be subjected to the same rules as the coaches and the players? Grow up Phil, better yet take your toys and go home, we don't want you anymore!

A BAILOUT PLAN

Here is the type of plan Congress should consider >

http://pacificgatepost.blogspot.com/2008/11/solution-for-detroit-gm-friends.html

Trying something outside the box like this, is the only way to save the U.S. Auto Industry.

There is much creative talent hidden inside the U.S. Big 3 that has been smothered by mismanagement and the UAW. ... and they actually "make" something, .... unlike Wall Street. Detroit deserves saving.

You can complain all you people want. It don't mean beans to them. All they care about is their money and nothing else. They say they care but don't. But at least we do have one thing that alot of teams don't have is wins. They might be bad, but at least we are not like alot of other teams 0-10 or 1-9. Still a fan but please give us a winning team. After all these years of waiting and paying we want to WIN. Oh ya, next year.

Michele,

That was Paul Silas and that was funny, all the more so because he was talking about Carlos "shake a blind man's hand and lie to him" Boozer.

_____

This phony outrage on this story is so silly. I agree Savage shouldn't be saying this to customers, but after seeing the juvenile nature of some posters on here and cleveland.com, I can't say I blame him.

Okay so Phil Savage said a bad word. BIG DEAL!!! (It was actually quite funny.) I agree with Jason there are some idiots professing themselves to be cleveland Fans. I think this incident just shows that Savage is human. How many of you have wanted to tell someone to F off at work, Savage just had the courage to do it....

Posted 04:33 PM, 11/20/2008

What is not in this article is the text of the "fan" email. I think it adds a lot to the story. Mostly because every word, with the exception of the "worse than Butch Davis" part, is absolutely true.

Crennel, Chud and Tucker look clueless. Harrison almost always adds a spark to the offense but is rarely used. And they continue to fold up the tent on defense in the fourth quarter.

If stating the obvious upsets Mr. Savage too bad. I have spent my last dime on this team until they get serious about building a legitimate organization.

And all this after a win on Monday night! Think the fans are fed up Randy?

This is the ultimate example of how the immaturity and unprofessionalism of this organization starts at the top and filters all the way down. Whether it is Braylen or Kellen barking, Derek whining, Jamal complaining, Romeo obfiscating, or Phil e-mailing, this team has no discipline and no class. It is an embarrassment. Makes me long for the days of Art Modell and that is saying something.

I wonder what would happen if Savage brought in a tough - minded veteran head coach (Schottenhemer,Ditka, etc.)who could give direction to both coordinators ? Romeo is a nice gentleman ,who just isn't head coaching material. He neither dictates his will on the game plan nor the players. This team had 5 pro-bowlers last year. They have the talent to be better than they are,but they lack discipline. It took a veteran player to standup before Edwards and Winslow would stop their preening and showboating.Where was the coach ? They are absolutely gassed by the fourth quarter. Where is the coach ? They continue to play non-performers like Andra Davis. Where is the coach ?

1. Start Jerome Harrison at RB
2. Start Joshua Cribbs at WR
3. Bench Edwards and Lewis
4. Implement West Coast Offense
5. Hire Jake's Crane to remove Large Sh*t Bag from Browns Stadium; Frog march Phil Savage from Browns Staduim during Half-Time festivities
6. RANDY LERNER: Fly to wherever Cowher is, hand him a blank check, then fly back to London and stay there until (see #8)
7. Rent a barge on Lake Erie to float out Cowher's "weed-outs" to an undisclosed destination for burial at sea.
8. Make Super-Bowl preparations by 2011.

How about coming to terms for the team you are rooting for and realizing they will always suck. Until the admin gets their head’s out of their a## and realize that they need to move in a new direction.

They need to understand what it takes to field a team that can win or you will only perpetuate the same situation… balance.

Defense , Running game and the rest will follow.

Mark Shapiro should look at Tampa Bay’s roster and get a clue also.

Be balanced!!!!!!! Both sides and take the in between.

Jason, thanks for the correction

not2normal, you will never get that “kick your a**, knock your teeth out” game back. Pittsburgh showed waaaaay too much love when our team left. For this Browns fan the hatred for the Baltimore Ravens runs deeper than it ever did for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

dave robish, if you want Art Modell back, you were never as big a Browns fan as you think you are.

As for the current situation, Braylon should have been benched weeks ago. He couldn’t catch a fish in an aquarium. That straw dawg milk isn’t working for him like he says in the commercial. Maybe he should drink something with some ba!!s, maybe it will help him to grow a pair!
